Pakistan Taliban Leader Reportedly Dead
ISLAMABAD — Local Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, the most wanted man by Pakistani and US intelligence agencies in the northern tribal belt, reportedly died of illness.
"Baitullah is dead," a senior intelligence official told IslamOnline.net on Wednesday, October 1, on condition of anonymity for not being authorized to leak the news.
"His funeral was held this morning at Saraogha area of South Waziristan."
The intelligence official said Baitullah Mehsud, the Amir of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, died a day earlier "due to extreme sugar levels."
Mehsud, believed to be around 36, was known to be suffering from diabetes and was on permanent treat.
"He had been bed-ridden for the last months due to his diabetic illness and subsequent heart problem."
There was no immediate confirmation or denial of the death report from the local Taliban.
"I believe he is dead and Taliban will hide the news for a while," says Rahimulah Yousafzai, a security analyst.
If confirmed, Baitullah Mehsud will likely be succeeded by Wali-ur-Rehman or Maulvi Faqeer Mohammad.
Analysts believe Wali-ur-Rehman have better chances because he hails from the same powerful Mehsud tribe.
