SF Weekly Launches New Attack on Alternative Press

by Randy Shaw via Beyond Chron
Monday, September 29, 2008 : The SF Weekly just can’t help itself when it comes to trying to undermine independent media sources. Earlier this year, a San Francisco jury verdict found that the publication had long engaged in predatory pricing against the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and awarded damages of over $15.5 million. Now the San Francisco outlet of the Village Voice media chain is seeking to undercut the Berkeley Daily Planet, running a story this week that promotes ad hominen attacks against the paper’s editor, Becky O’Malley.
Significantly for a publication whose ethics have been found wanting by both a judge and jury, the SF Weekly legitimizes accusations against O’Malley that could similarly be raised against editors of almost all publications, and which are utterly without merit.

I think it is about time we the people shut down SF Weekly.
They are pathetic and their writers are immature and unprofessional.
Their stories are NOT useful nor are they considered news.

This dispute isn't really such a big deal . It's true that the SF Weekly is essentially a Libertarian paper, that is liberal on social issues but often very right wing on economic issues (note their attacks on Rent control for example ) . But this article is hardly a hit piece . Two middle aged Women journalists , both with long histories in what i would call the ''soft'' Left , are calling each other liars . Ho Hum !
There is a real story about the local Progressive Media that many are ignoring , the situation at KPFA . Most recently the outgoing Exec director of Pacifica , Nicole Sawaya , apponted the intermin General Manager as permanent G.M. despite the fact that over 70 staff members have signed a '' No Confidence ' statement re her role . The Wellstone Democractic Club , who are mentioned in the insignificant O'Malley/Schiff dispute, launched a group called '' Concerned Listeners' that have played a very controversial role on the Elected Station board , according to many undermining the hard won democratic decision making process at Pacifica . To their credit BDF have extensively and fairly covered this struggle . Other Alternative media really haven't .

I meant to write BDP (for Berkeley Daily Planet ) not BDF
