KPFA's New Police State Rules; Sept 13 LSB station board meeting

by =
KPFA management just threw fuel on the fire with it new police state rules, effective Sept 10, 2008, after its calling of the police to viciously beat up, hot tie and arrest a long time programmer who made a phone call for a ride on 8/20/08. You can hear more on SF Labor Cable on 9/12/08 and protest at the Local Station Board meeting on 9/13/08.

On the September 10, 2008 Flashpoints program, about 10 minutes before the end of this 1 hour program, heard on KPFA, 94.1 FM, at 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, you can hear a description of the new draconian police state rules for the staff at KPFA which will certainly cause most of the programs to end as it involves all kinds of badges, signing statements which can be used to throw people out of the station, a memo by management encouraging the calling of the police to KPFA and much more. We must all ask, what is the labor union for the paid employees doing about all of this? Are they going to challenge these new police state rules?

This comes after the brutal beating, hot-tieing, putting in a wrap and arrest of a long time volunteer programmer at KPFA, Nadra Foster, on August 20, 2008, who was doing nothing more than making a phone call to get a ride home. The so-called "banning" (an insane practice that must end immediately) of Ms. Foster was unknown to her and involved her making photocopies so her children could color on something while she made programs. Worth noting is that Ms. Foster is African American; white women who bring children to the station are not "banned" for letting them use a ocmputer while their mother makes programs. Remember, 90% of the workers at KPFA are VOLUNTEERS. There is no KPFA without the volunteers.

This story will again be covered by San Francisco's Labor Cable program on Channel 29, Labor on the Job, on September 12, 2008 at 9 p.m. in an hour-long labor program heard the 2d and 4th Fridays of the month.

And, YOU CAN AND MUST DO YOUR PART TO PROTEST. The elected Local Station Board meets on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Cafe de la paz, 1600 Shattuck, Berkeley. For more on this event, see:

Where is Ms. Foster's work output for the last four months, if she has in fact been a programmer for KPFA? Are there outtakes, air checks, run sheets or any other evidence that she was in fact a "staff member" as claimed?

As a paying member/subscriber, I expect that the facilities be secure for the production of KPFA programming. Not for the cast of thousands that attempted to pack UPSO, but for confirmed KPFA workers.

I am so disgusted by KPFA! And then this commenter here tries to justify KPFA's actions!
Simply Terrible, but it is the Amerikkkan way.

The "Amerikkkan" way, Hans? Listen, I too am quite skeptical of my government as well as the actions of many businesses in today's free enterprise society. No doubt what KPFA management is doing is highly suspect and should be brought to the attention of everyone via our often porous mainstream media right away. I commend the writer of this post for raising awareness about this awful situation.

Nonetheless, you sir (i.e. Hans) ought to be schooled properly in the founding principles of our country, for such men as Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin would be absolutely shocked at your insinuating that our country is equivalent to one giant hate group organization, as is evident in your post. I humbly ask that you provide relevant feedback to the story instead of justifying your own disagreement with the prior commenter (whose opinions I myself do not agree with) by posting a comment that goes beyond the pale in terms of relevant discourse aimed at the article in question.

Given this entire sad incident is being spun by "both" sides, I'm looking for some verifiable facts.

If Ms. Foster was in fact working on producing actual programming for KPFA in the Ujima studio, what's the big deal? And how is asking if there is evidence to support the claim that she was in the production studio doing KPFA work taking the management's line?

If she was working there, there would be evidence to back that up.

I haven't been subscribing to KPFA for 15 years so that exceptionalized "activists" can come and use the studio for private projects, to hang out, or for any use that is not used for KPFA programming. I continue to hear from one side that Ms. Foster was using the production studio for a legitimate purpose. The management line is that she hasn't done work for any KPFA program for the last four months.

That should be very easy to prove, if management is lying. So, bring the proof already! Prove management lied! The narrative of the "minister of information" who has tried to extort air time from two consecutive managers isn't good enough. As a PACIFICA listener who questions such narratives, how insulting it is to be screeched at for not accepting this narrative at face value.

So, cite some verifiable facts. The Internet is a wonderful tool. Evidence of Ms. Foster's KPFA work for the last four months, and especially on the day of the latest confrontation, should be easily obtainable and uploadable. Do it, already. Let's get to the bottom of this. Seeking the truth is not the domain of either management or the loyal opposition. It damn well is for us hapless subscriber/members held hostage by the propaganda campaigns of both.
