GROUPS CLAIM BUSH RUSHING TO REWRITE ENDANGERED SPECIES RULES
Associated Press - 8/22/08
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hkF1lWZoKQaqIgrv4XHs4RAorcQgD92NHQMG6
The Bush administration is providing insufficient time for public comment as it seeks to loosen rules protecting endangered species, representatives of more than 100 conservation groups charged Friday. The Interior Department set a 30-day public comment period last week on an administration proposal that would allow federal agencies approving or funding dams, highways and other projects to decide for themselves — without input from government experts — whether endangered species are likely to be harmed. That's half the time that was originally scheduled in a draft obtained by The Associated Press. A shorter timeframe would give the administration a better chance of imposing the rules before November's presidential election.
CALIFORNIA NEEDS A BALANCED, SCIENTIFIC PLAN FOR OCEAN PROTECTION
Opinion - Eureka Times-Standard - 8/23/08
http://www.times-standard.com/othervoices/ci_10283765
Gov. Schwarzenegger recently joined the governors of Oregon and Washington to announce ambitious goals to safeguard critical marine resources along the West Coast. Among other things, the plan calls for cleaning up coastal waters, restoring fisheries, combating climate change, reducing the impacts of offshore development and fostering economic development in coastal communities. These are all laudable ambitions that, if done correctly, can make a real difference to protect the Pacific Ocean off these state's coasts and sustain marine resources. But protecting these important resources will take more than an announcement from three governors.
CALIFORNIA SUPPORTS WINNEMUM WINTU TRIBE: SENATE PASSES JOINT RESOLUTION
http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/08/13/18526056.php
Bay Area Independent Media - 8/13/08
The California Senate on Wednesday passed a Joint Resolution urging the federal government to restore federal recognition status to the Winnemem Wintu Tribe. The resolution, authored by Assembly Member Huffman, passed with 24 votes. The Tribe has played a big leadership role in the battle to restore the California Delta and Central Valley rivers and stop the raising of Shasta Dam.

Action Alerts:
* DON'T WATCH DICK DESTROY - COMMENT ON ESA ROLLBACKS
Interior Secretary Dick Kempthorne is trying to pull a fast one on us by gutting the ESA before the Bush Administration slips out the back door. Even worse, the administration has given a paltry 30-day comment period for the public to respond. Not so fast Dick! Read the news article above, then take a stand for the Klamath's endangered coho and send a quick letter through the Center for Biological Diversity at http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2167/t/5243/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=25351.
* KLAMATH JUSTICE COALITION ANNOUNCES PACIFICORP DAY OF ACTION - 9/18/2008
Klamath Riverkeeper is joining with Tribes and fishermen and other Klamath River community organizers to participate in a Day of Action Against PacifiCorp on Thursday, September 18th, 2008. Announcements:
* OPC SALMON PROTECTION WORKSHOPS FOR THE PUBLIC, EUREKA, CA - August 26th in Eureka, CA
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Agriculture Center, 5630 South Broadway Street, Eureka
From the Ocean Protection Council: "The OPC recognizes that California has already benefitted from a significant amount of work by thousands of people on salmon issues and seeks to build on and maximize these investments in salmon. The workshops have three goals: (1) to review current California policy on wild salmon protection; (2) to identify the top causes of wild salmon population decline; and (3) to receive feedback from the public on how the OPC can help ensure wild populations of salmon exist in California for future generations. There is a particular interest in “big ideas” about statewide policy objectives for salmon and the core strategies we are using, or should consider using, to achieve those objectives."
If you have questions about the workshops, please direct them to Valerie Termini (OPC staff) at 510–286-0319. More on the OPC at http://www.resources.ca.gov/copc/

Opportunities for organizing for the Klamath Justice Coalition's September 18th PacifiCorp Day of Action Demanding Dam Removal will be available. Admission is by donation.
