When President McKinley was shot by Czolgosz
"Those in line behind Czolgosz and guards in the room all jumped on Czolgosz and started to punch him. Seeing that the mob on Czolgosz might easily and quickly kill him, President McKinley whispered either, "Don't let them hurt him" or "Go easy on him, boys." "
Edmund Morris reports in the book Theodore Rex that McKinley's
last words before his death several days later were "Nearer my God
to Thee. Thy will be done."
(McKinley was shot on Sept 6 2001 and was recovering, but gangrene from the bullet's path through nonvegetarian intestines was the final cause of death. When George Wallace,
American candidate for president shot by a hit man employed by war profiteers, was hit, he had, said a national news magazine,
just eaten a hamburger, and the bullet trailed an ecoli (colon
bacteria) path through his body.)

But this is SILLY! In 1901 a gunshot through the guts was just as much a death sentence from peritonitis for a vegetarian as for a person with an omnivore diet. And in the human gut, the presence of E. coli isn't because of eating meat! What the devil do you think the "coli" in the scientific name means? (of the colon). This organism is one of the NORMAL members of the floral population of the human intestinal tract.
It was only with the introduction of antiboitics beginning a few decades later that there was much chance of survival following a wound like that.
1) It's presence (say in water) is how one usually tests for excrement contamination of water. Easy to do becuase E. coli is a lactose fermenter. They don't usually bother looking for th eorganism itself (a more exepnsive test) but just see if lactose fermenters present -- that COULD be a false positive in some places but mostly lactose fermenters woudl be absent for non contaminated water.
2) Like with all organisms, when we say "infection" we mean too many of them. Your system when healthy is a balanced give and take of a host of organisms. Ones that would be deadly, over run the immune system if present in large numbers, might always be present in small numbers. If these were totally absent you'd be sick too (as a system, your body depends upon some of them).
Cows can't eat grass and termites can't eat wood (organisms in their respective digestive tracts are vital in breaking down their food for them)
