Caples Lake Fish Rescue Update - No more volunteers needed at this time

by Dan Bacher
The campaign by the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance and Trout Unlimited to sign up volunteers for the fish rescue at Caples Lake has been very successful. As of this morning, no more volunteers are needed at this time. "Thank you for the tremendous response," said Jerry Neuburger of the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance.

As one who was involved in exposing the Prospect Island fish kill on the California Delta last November and pushing for the successful volunteer fish rescue after a long delay by federal and state agencies, I am very pleased to see that the DFG, CSPA, TU and the El Dorado Irrigation District are working cooperatively on this year's fish rescue at Caples Lake. I highly commend CSPA and TU for taking the leadership role on this fish rescue operation!

Here's the details on the rescue operation:

Wednesday morning update. WE'RE FULL UP! NO MORE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT THIS TIME! Thank you for the tremendous response!

by Jerry Neuburger

August 20, 2008. -- Over 75 volunteers have signed up in the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance/Trout Unlimited effort to assist DFG in the fish rescue to take place at Caples Lake starting August 26 and ending August 29.

Many of the volunteers signed up for multiple shifts for a total coverage of over 20 people per shift. While some are just avid anglers or conservationists, a good number of those signing up have prior fisheries experience, some retired from DFG and others from various fisheries agencies or private firms.

Chris Shutes, CSPA's FERC Projects Director, will meet with DFG at 2 pm today (Wednesday, August 20th) to refine the work schedule. Once that meeting is over, volunteers will be contacted by phone by either Barbara Bania of Sac-Sierra TU or Jerry Neuburger, webmaster, CSPA, to confirm their duties and shifts. The calls will extend through Thursday.

In addition, the volunteer's e-mail addresses will be entered into a special e-mail account allowing a single mass mailing for any updates necessary throughout the term of the project.

Although the volunteers are responsible for all of their personal needs while on site, Chris Shutes is trying to secure a block of campsites. At the time of initial contact, volunteers will be asked if they require a campsite and although CSPA/TU can't promise campsites being reserved at this time, every effort will be made to secure an adequate amount.

Additional updates regarding the situation will be posted daily on this website as necessary. In addition, CSPA hopes to post daily reports from Caples lake during the rescue operation including photos.
