Don't trust polls on Prop Hate

Over the decades, U.S. pollsters have learned that many mainstream citizens
don't like to admit their unfashionable biases, when asked by pollsters.
Yet they may act on such prejudices in secret, when voting.
Usually we notice this in elections when a black candidate faces a white candidate
( and when both are of the same gender).
A white man may say he favors the black candidate -- and yet, on Election Day,
he votes against her.
How might this work with regard to Cal Prop 8, ostensibly about marriage, but mainly about religion, philosophy, and sexual orientation?
I don't know -- but, as an activist who rushes in where professors fear to tread,
let me offer two hypo-theses
( testable guesses):
(1) If a female supporter of Prop 8 is motivated by religion only,
then she can openly say, " I hate the sin,
but I love the sinner(s)."
[ Just as this queer hates crack and speed,
yet loves his addicted friends. ]
And then she can openly fight
against queer rights;
even if she has queer friends,
relatives, co-workers.
(2) If a male voter is anti-queer
for NON-religious reasons,
then he may keep his homophobia
in the closet -- until he actually votes.
So pre-election polls may accurately count voters in category (1) above,
yet miss voters in category (2).
