In 1999, a series of bizarre deaths began unfolding in Russia. Since Vladimir Putin came to power, thirteen Russian journalists have been killed one after another. How has a man so often criticized as czarist, corrupt, despotic, and deceitful managed to uphold the support of the Russian people? The re-emerging Russia is more formidable as an economic power than a military power, but it is not a threat to be dismissed.
