Natural disasters in China have led in the past to rulers being toppled. The manmade disaster exposed by China's earthquake—schoolchildren crushed under the weight of shoddy buildings erected by well-connected insiders—has deepened popular revulsion against China's rulers.
News & Letters Workshop Talks Columnist Htun Lin will discuss the cost of China's expansion and power, of just who is paying the price: the children killed in the recent earthquakes; the workers, including child laborers; displaced peasants and farmers; the people of Tibet; even the people of Darfur. An open discussion will follow the presentation SUNDAY, JULY 13, 2008 6:30 PM Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library, 6501 Telegraph Ave. Oakland, Ca.
