4TH ANNUAL OLD TIME AMERICAN FLAG BURN

A Community Celebration of Freedom of Speech
8PM THURSDAY JULY 3 Seabright Beach at the Far West Fire Ring
This is a BYOF event (Bring Your Own Flag)

For the forth year in a row we invite our community to a ritual celebration of the First Amendment to the Constitution which protects freedom of speech including the burning of our country's flag. We do not take flag burning lightly, we hold it as one of our most sacred of freedoms. Instead of flag desecration this is flag consecration. We honor our country and the many who died fighting for our freedom as we honor the constitution and the flag itself.

Two years ago congress attempted to amend the constitution to ban flag desecration and it failed by one vote. We celebrate that. Since then congress has continued to attempt to generate a bill that would pass muster but support has decreased. We understand that this issue is challenging for some people but as Justice William Joseph Brennan, Jr. noted that the "Principal function of free speech under our system of government is to invite dispute; it may indeed best serve its high purpose when it induces condition of unrest, creates dissatisfaction with conditions as they are, or even stirs people to anger." Our intention is not to anger folks but to create a safe place for our community to exercise this seldom used freedom.

Of course, usually flag burning is a used in protest of a government's behavior. We feel that our government has acted against the will of her people and as such a flag burnt in protest may be in order and is our protected right under the law. Whether you wish to celebrate or protest or to just come and be a witness we welcome you to join us. Please bring your own flag.

Two things: 1st of all, all this super-patriotic claptrap is making me barf. The United Snakes of Amerikkka (no insult to real snakes) is a repressive war-mongering nation (always has been since the days of slavery and massive Native American genocide) and its flag needs to burned for that reason. The buirning-the-flag-to-save-America BS is ridiculous. THE USA has no reason to be saved. Its flag, and its repressive and exploitative institutions should be burned to the ground.
Secondly, in these days of wildfires pollution and the rest, be careul where you burn. Nature and people's houses are good. Keep a good watch in the frivolity of flag-burning. Also try for cotton, hemp (i know, burning hemp is illegal), or paper flags should be used. The plastic kinds are toxic and don't burn that well.
