On July 7, 1908, the Great White Fleet left San Francisco to show the flag and expand US power in Asia. At the time, Mark Twain and AFL founder Samual Gompers opposed this expansion of the United States through the occupation of the Philippines and other countries. Cushing will look at this history and its relevance to today’s wars in the Middle East.
