Green Capitalists Get Window Smashed
Inspired by the recent actions of solidarity happening in Santa Cruz, we decided to actualize our discontent and outrage at the disgusting lie that green-capitalism tells us: that there is such thing as sustainable industry. Thus our local green-capitalist home furnishing center, "Greenspace," got a landscaping rock thrown through its window.
And how great it felt to hear the giant plate glass shatter along with the illusion that commerce is invulnerable to our attacks. It was so easy it makes us giddy to think that such an act is infinitely reproducible. Not an hour out of our lives was wasted. A pair of gloves and a couple medium-sized rocks (along with a burning desire to cease our everyday acquiescence) is all it takes.
Certainly a rock is not going to stop the destructive forces of capitalism, but the empowerment that comes in the form of gained confidence as well as cathartic release is priceless. Let each rock thrown become a stepping stone to greater and bolder actions.
We dedicate this action in solidarity with the Earth and all it's living creatures. Don't let the enemies of life on this planet claim to you that your dollars can change the destructiveness of industry. Call them out on their blatant lies and fight until capitalism lies in ruins!

I get it that you want to smash capitalism. But what's your vision of how things will work if you succeed? Do we all go back to barter and subsistence living? Not all of us have equal talents or resources. Isn't there space for people who make or sell things that are responsible alternatives to goods produced without the environment in mind? And isn't a store like Greenspace a preferable alternative to a store like, say, Wal-mart where lowest cost is the deciding factor over all others?
anarchist like emma goldman organized, she didn't smash things just for kicks. i suggest those doing this take a read through Peter Kropotkin or Emma Goldman's visions of anarchy. smashing windows is just property destruction. to those who smashed the window's, have you read any of Murray Bookchin's essays?
i simply don't see the point in this, and yes, i've used a monkey wrench a time or two myself. and if this is the name of the eco political prisoners, maybe those prisoners don't want to be associated with these types of actions. it might bring down more draconian restrictions on them while in the grips of the man's reach; the system can justify whatever they want when people are in their custody. did you think about that when smashing the windows?
mumia hasn't been executed because thousands have taken to the streets. not because a few windows have been smashed. sure he's had top notch litigators fighting for a new trial, but if you look historically when his death warrants have been signed and what's taken place in the streets by the masses, the judges sitting in their chambers notice these things, maybe. the governor's convection is one time that comes to mind. ie...mumia's death warrant was signed by Ridge and the masses took to the street. the courts granted an injunction against mumia's death warrant. was it a legally based injunction, maybe, but would a few smashed windows had the same effect as the masses in the streets? i doubt it.
get some sort of analysis behind your actions; for now, I just see this as backfiring against those who need support by progressives. i don't think that green capitalism is the answer to solving the planetary crisis we're in, but nor do i see this as being a worthwhile action. what's the point, besides stroking your little egos for a few quick minutes of satisfaction? i assume your now going to organize like hell and make changes because of the empowerment, if not, i'd not be surprised if your a implant for the man.
and i surely hope that your ready to do the time if you get caught. don't turn states evidence and set someone up because your afraid of doing time for a small worthless action. those incarcerated like mcdavid or "free" have faced serious draconian sentences. in hindsight i think free admits he wouldn't do it again. so again, what's the point of this?
be careful, choose targets wisely and also be prepared for the ramifications of your actions!

The communique clearly critiques the phenomenon of green capitalism in general. Who gives a shit about Greenspace anyways? It's ridiculous to see how many local "radicals" and "anarchists" are so protective of a capitalist business--if a generalized destruction of capitalism is not to your tastes, try reform instead of anarchy.
Sigh..
Do you really believe that the communique clearly critiques the phenomenon of green capitalism in general? You call this a clear critique?
"..the disgusting lie that green-capitalism tells us: that there is such thing as sustainable industry."
I give a shit about Greenspace because I want to try and prevent harmful chemicals from entering the water we drink and air we breath. Greenspace is taking steps in that direction.

Everyone benefited from this interaction:
Some anarchists got to throw rocks, break a window, declare war on green capitalism.
Greenspace gets an insurance return, and free advertising on Indymedia thanks to the "unimpressed anarchist."
Indymedia commentators get to have a field day of indignation, outrage, and reaction.

i'm not so protective of this company, but i damn well can criticize this so called action, that really isn't an action, but someone who thinks property destruction is a solution to the planetary crisis.
anarchy, do you even understand the principles behind anarchy? i doubt it.... this was a lame action, don't get into my activism "immature property destruction" is better than yours...
want to publicize the problems with green capitalism, write up some analysis of paul hawkins books on the subject and why his logic is wrong. challenge these folks to a debate. smashing their windows, that's polluting. i hope your going to off set the carbon that you've contributed now that they need to replace the windows and melt more sand. come on, get real...
fuck the punks who think that their cool by smashing windows in the name of anarchy. you haven't a clue...

Did you know that Greenspace is one of the key places that activists who are against the spraying of Checkmate to combat the LBAM go to pick up and drop off materials related to their work? I can't imagine why some dumb$%^# anarchist thinks that it is cool to trash this particular business. Where do you work at to get a paycheck anyway? Probably some less than stellar business that exploits workers while selling products soaked in blood. We all are a part of that trend weather you like it or not.
haven't seen this place, but, small businesses typically don't really qualify as capitalism. Capitalism implies serious means of production or funds. Small businesses still can have flaws like having an owner with personality disorder, reselling merchandise that was unethically made, or doing a polluting service, but when anticapitalists talk about capitalism, they usually refer to big capitalism, rather than the practice of using currency and selling goods and services.
An optimum noncommunist society still would have small businesses of some sort, unless you are thinking of a sort of primitivism where each family is so generalist that they provide all their own needs. Even under the barter systems that get set up locally, they often need to establish a type of credit system for number of work hours or goods contributed that can be exchanged for something else.. and this is what the concept of money was invented for. it's just that under barter, there is no profit or tax, or distortion of the currency by centralized forces.

murray bookchin is to anarchism what hillary clinton is to anarchism
This kind of action gives anarchists a bad name. It mobilizes opposition to your cause. It accomplishes nothing in terms of your stated goal. Its mean. Its stupid. And those that did it are cowards hiding behind pseudonyms and running away after the action rather than staying and facing the music. I hope Indybay is not supporting this kind of action.
If you had any clue about your own community, you would know that this business was started by a nice woman who was murdered last year. Did you know that? Do you think the current owners deserve to be punished by your childish actions?
Yes, the police misbehave. Yes, the corporations are trying to enslave us. But this shit is bonehead.
Santa Cruz husband arrested in wife's death

SANTA CRUZ -- The man suspected of killing his wife in their Eastside home Tuesday will be charged with murder this morning, District Attorney Bob Lee said.
Marshall Kent Doud, 41, turned himself in at the Santa Cruz police station around 10 p.m. Tuesday, more than 15 hours after police started searching for him.
Morgana Doud, 42, died of asphyxiation by suffocation, according to police spokesman Zach Friend. One of the couple's three teenage children found her dead in their home's master bedroom around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Her death is the first homicide in the city of Santa Cruz this year.
Marshall Doud was arrested about 2 a.m. Wednesday and booked into County Jail on $750,000 bail. Doud, who could not be reached to comment, faces life in prison.
"Currently the motive's unclear," Friend said. "You never know what potentially could cause somebody to do such a heinous crime or why they would develop a conscience and come in to talk to us afterward. Regardless, we believe that Mr. Doud killed his wife with his children in this home.
"It is an immeasurable loss for the kids who will have to live with this tragedy for years to come," Friend said.
Marshall Doud, a lacrosse coach at Harbor High School who worked at Seagate Technologies in Scotts Valley, had driven away before his wife's death was reported to authorities, according to Lee. Marshall Doud told police he went to the Santa Cruz Mountains, but investigators revealed little else about what he said during a four-hour interview Tuesday night and early Wednesday.
"We're still trying to figure out why," Lee said. "That's what we're looking into now."
Investigators have not uncovered a history of domestic violence, he said.
"Sometimes [spousal abuse] can strike in the worst of all possibilities ... from what appears to be a normal and happy home," Lee said.
The family lived in a Mentel Avenue home across from Arana Gulch. Police were still scouring the house for clues Wednesday morning.
The couple's children are staying with family members who came to be with them, one from as far away as Oklahoma, according to police.
"The family's been remarkable," Friend said.
An artist by trade, Morgana Doud had been involved in green building for several years -- something she became interested in when she tried to "green" her own home -- and had previously worked at Eco Design Solutions downtown before managing Greenspace, a new eco-friendly home store on Soquel Avenue. She had also been a founder of Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Association.
Friends said she was enthusiastic, smart and caring.
Lori Butterworth, another founder of Jacob's Heart, said the last time she spoke to Morgana Doud, it seemed she was elated with her role at Greenspace because it combined her two loves: art and business.
"She was just so happy, because her job allowed her to be creative and use her business side, too," Butterworth said.
Greenspace owner Dave Henry said Morgana Doud had dreamed up the idea of starting an all-encompassing green home store and began laying the groundwork for Greenspace a year ago with Henry's late partner, Robert Frankl. Frankl died in March.
"So now both of the founders are gone," Henry said, adding he's unsure what the future of the store will be. "This week I'm not even thinking about it."
Morgana Doud put in long hours at Greenspace, helping the store break even long before their business plan projected it would, Henry said.
"She's the reason the store exists," he said. "She ran it pretty much by herself."
Friends were quick to add that Morgana Doud's first priority was her three children, all Harbor High students.
"She was so proud of those kids," Henry said.

"Ignorant anarchist" is just a punk vandal who uses cries against capitalism to justify being a jerk. I'm really tired of the willfully ignorant spouting off about things they know nothing about and don't want to know anything about because that would require them to think. You know, IA, if you can't be part of the solution, why don't you just shut up.
Greenspace is a unique and important presence in our town. They do good work and they do it with compassion and conscience. I'll take their view of the world over those of "ignorant anarchist" any time.

Listen now:
this is posted without david rovic's permission. stolen directly from the internet. hah, take a listen because i'm a better anarchist than you.
Sometimes we, as in the humans on the other end of the computer, have to be aware that sometimes people who commit acts in the "name" of something, often times it is slanderous in nature. I would question the people who wrote and perpetrated and look to their true motive, before I let these kinds of actions speak for Ideas.
The practice of dark magic leads to a self-destructive, damaging whirlwind of power if you are not careful with it.
I was sad to hear that people such as those that celebrate their destructiveness can be so misguided. The same people also vandalized gateways bookstore as well, another barely subsisting local business, in service to the deeper longing and good in people. Hopefully people can redirect their anger towards more worthy and productive endeavors than harming people in the community who are trying to make a positive difference.
I asked. Greenspace does not have insurance for this. Plus the vandalism caused broken glass to cover all kinds of baby clothes which had to be thrown away because they could not be sold if there possibly was broken glass in them. Greenspace: You guys rock, and I hope all the best for you. Don't let them get you down.
I don't agree with your views, I would like to destroy something you own -- Could you please direct me towards your property?
If you don't give me your home address, you're a hypocrite, so out with it already -- you approve of violence in response to that which you do not agree with, I don't agree with you -- so you better stand up for your principals or shut up.

nr something in one of the later commentaries made an inference that the act of smashing a window was violent. i just have to point out, I disagree. this was an act of vandalism or property destruction. rape, murder, battery, bombing innocent civilians, that's violence. arson is arson or property destruction. i refuse to let the media or others dictate that property destruction is violent. please call things for what they are.
i also made some prior postings on this thread entirely disagreeing with this vandalism. this window smashing honestly served no purpose other than pointing out to those who did it are foolish and uneducated.
i'm a better anarchist than you... david's song hits this act on the head.

Yes, it was poor judgement for someone to pick a local business as an example of the corruption of capitalism. No doubt. A larger corporation like Walmart or McDonalds would have almost been commendable. BUT there is a need for rebuilding and restructuring the environment we have allowed to grow up around us. That means tearing down the oppressive and commercial oriented architecture to allow for progression and creativity in its place. There is a need for patience, as it will come about eventually, and these anarchists are clearly at their limit. There is also an obvious leadership or organizational issue...someone or a group of someones need to draw up the course of action to take that will be the more productive course of action. Random vandalism or violence will only step up the oppressive and militant behavior by our authorities that rears it's ugly head in every city worldwide at any provocation these days. These anarchists are guilty of being too frustrated to think wisely. Rather than chastise them for their insensitive action look at what's behind it and find out how to turn it on the larger powers of capitalistic greed. Start at the top and the bottom will see it coming in time to improve.
The real problem is not capitalism - it's the human race. Human beings will always be greedy pigs hungry for power. As long as humans exist there will always be power struggle. The answer is to stop breeding like flies. With less human locusts around the less destruction there will be.
Also of course being policed by a handful of corrupt government officials doesn't make things easier. Democracy is a lie just like all other governments.

You can call it a specific form of violence (that would be vandalism), but it is still violence.
Violence is quite simply the use of force to damage, obviously vandalism is a much less severe form of violence than rape, but it falls under the auspices of violence all the same.
These are acts that won't make a difference -- by a group that is so marginalized (rightfully so) that their only recourse is to lash out with violence... It's fine, it's an admission that your cause is not shared by the majority.

I voted for the Sheriff, so can you, or you can vote for the Mayor... No, democracy is not a lie -- the problem is that democracy works, it's just that the majority disagree with you. Democracy works fine.

How can you trust a flawed human being to govern a bunch of flawed people? So many things can be changed but in the end we have too many flawed people in control that we supposedly elected and they more or less only follow their own self interested agendas.

"but the empowerment that comes in the form of gained confidence as well as cathartic release is priceless."
What type of empowerment is this? Does it build power of average folks to fight the state? or better yet, capitalism? Seriously, anarchists need to put energy into building a movement that can fight capitalism, not do stupid bullshit like this.
cathartic release? please. masturbation is a great cathartic release. It certainly aint anarchism though.

Accountability (laws, elections, etc), and not being naive enough to expect perfection in any realm of human endeavor.
Ultimately yes, humans are all interested in their own interests first, this is a fundamental truth, it's a biological imperative.

"actualize our discontent and outrage ..." This is what a two-year-old is doing when they pitch a fit. You people are an embarrassment to the local movement. What an unimaginative, unproductive, and in the end stupid act. Get it together to strike at real targets. What are you doing about the presence of Lockheed Martin in Santa Cruz County? A multinational military corporation that is responsible for manufacturing, among other things, nuclear bombs and cluster bombs and one of the premiere profiteers of the wars. In comparison to a small local business that tries to help people live more environmentally, there are a multitude of more appropriate targets for direct action. What idiots!!!
Appropriate targets have real security. Appropriate targets might get the local, state and federal police worked up enough to do something. Appropriate targets would require the vandals to take some risk.
