Aid Misspending Dispirits Afghans
KABUL — Living in crumbling mud-brick homes with a dearth of electricity, clean water and proper sanitation, many Afghans are not moved by billions of dollars donated to their country in a conference thousands of miles away.
"We know that millions of dollars have been donated to Afghanistan during [Hamid] Karzai's government, but it hasn't directly affected normal people's life," Karima Sediqi, a schoolteacher in Kabul, told Reuters on Thursday, June 12.
"I haven't been paid for several months. I have children to feed, salaries are very low there is no control on prices, no good security, no water no protection."
Meeting thousands of miles away in Paris, world donors pledged 20 billion dollars to rebuild Afghanistan.
The lion's share of funds came from the US, which offered 10.2 billion dollars over the next two years.
Karzai asked donors to finance part of a 50-billion-dollar development plan over the next five years.
The donors called on Karzai to make tangible effort on combating corruptions and enhancing the rule of law.
"Every act of corruption is a deliberate act by someone in a position of authority," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
