'US strike deaths' anger Pakistan

by BBC (reposted)
Pakistan's military has condemned what it says was an air strike by US-led forces that killed 11 Pakistani troops as a "cowardly attack".
Details remain sketchy of the incident on the border with Afghanistan, which took place as US-led forces tackled pro-Taleban militants.

The US military confirmed it had used artillery and air strikes after coming under fire from "anti-Afghan" forces.

The incident comes amid rising tensions between the US and Pakistan militaries.

The soldiers' deaths occurred overnight at a border post in the mountainous Gora Prai region in Mohmand, one of Pakistan's tribal areas, across the border from Afghanistan's Kunar province.

Eight Taleban militants were also killed in the clashes, a Taleban spokesman said.

'Act of aggression'

In a statement, the Pakistani military quoted a spokesman who condemned "this completely unprovoked and cowardly act".

ISLAMABAD — A US airstrike that killed eleven army soldiers and several civilians inside Pakistan has drawn an unprecedented strongly-worded condemnation and could cloud years of strategic military and intelligence cooperation.
"This is a completely unprovoked and cowardly act," Major General Ather Abbas, Director General of the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), told IslamOnline.net on Wednesday, June 11.

An American drone fired a missile at a checkpost in Mohmind agency on the Afghan border on Tuesday, June 10, killing at least eleven army soldiers and several civilians.

"We regret the loss of precious lives of our soldiers in this violent act," said Abbas.

He stressed that a strong protest has been lodged by the army over this missile attack.

Pakistani politicians and military chiefs today accused US-led forces of killing 11 of their troops in "cowardly" air strikes along the Afghan border.

The attack "hit at the very basis of cooperation" between Pakistani and coalition forces in Afghanistan, the country's military said in a statement.

The prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, condemned the attack. "We will take a stand for sovereignty, integrity and self-respect and we will not allow our soil [to be attacked]," he told Pakistan's parliament.

At least nine civilians were also killed, Afghan politicians said, during prolonged skirmishes and air strikes along Afghanistan's eastern border.

The air strikes followed a clash between Afghan forces and Taliban militants. There were conflicting reports over the sequence of events and of how many died in the fighting.
