Iraq Veterans Against the War (6/27)

by JS
The I.V.A.W will be hosting a benefit event to bring awareness to the public of the war in Iraq. The service members experienced something in this war that hasn't been felt since Vietnam. The benefit will have four Bands playing, various artists along with a variety of organizations in Santa Cruz that stand against the war in Iraq.

6 pm 'til midnite on Friday June 27th is the time for the Iraq Veterans Against the War benefit concert featuring local bands and visual artists at the Santa Cruz Vets Hall on Front St. Admission is only $10 and all the money goes to IVAW, which recently added a Santa Cruz area chapter.

Featured artists are Matt Childers, one of the founders of Santa Cruz IVAW, Phil Pflager from Vets for Peace, William Muir, Sam Sweeley and many others. The bands are Ashkon (hip hop), Annie and the Vets (folk with an edge), the Reliques (psychedelic), Cripple Catch and the MIDI Mob (hip hop).

IVAW has 3 objectives- Immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, Reparation for the Iraqi peoples, Proper care, treatment and support for Iraqi and Afghani vets. IVAW is the sponsor and producer of Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan, held at Silver Spring, MD in March 2008. Members have planned and participated in hundreds of demonstrations, teach ins, truth in recruitment events, panels and civil disobedience actions in the US, Canada and Europe. In May, several members testified under oath on Capitol Hill on the dehumanization of the Iraqi people, the abuse of detainees, the changing rules of engagement and the killing of innocent civilians at hearings convened by the Congressional Progressive Caucus. See ivaw.org for more information.

Sponsors for the event are IVAW Santa Cruz, the GI Rights Hotline Central Coast (girightshotline.org, 877.447.4487), Veterans for Peace Bay Area/Santa Cruz Chapters and VFW Post 5888. Thanks to VFW for hosting the event.

by Supporter of IVAW but wonders
i support IVAW. Unconditionally . But i do have a couple of thoughts that might be ''inconvienent ''. Unless the war turns out to be a total rout for the US i doubt if a majority of Iraqi Vets , let alone those currently ''serving '' there, will turn against the war.
Let's face it . The Military is far more uniformerly right wing than in the 60's . I think that those that enlisted in , say 1965, were far more naive than those that signed up in 2005 . Those enlistees in the 60's were coming out of the 50's , a very ignorant era .
Those who sign up now are far more knowledgable about the real world than those earlier GI's . I think that many make a consious , very reactionary choice when they sign up .
I think that McCain may be right, that many , (Most ? ) want to ''win '' , ie crush all resistance and turn Iraq in to a client puppet state for decades to come .
I DO NOT SUPPORT THOSE TROOPS!
I hope i'm mistaken but i don't think we should bet on Vietnam style mass refusals ,desertions , etc.
PS One question for anyone in IVAW. Does IVAW also call for withdraw from Afghanistan ? (if not why not ? )
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
