Migrawatch Denounces ICE Raids

Migrawatch denounces the gestapo-like tactics of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE). More than 900 people were taken in California and over 700 in Iowa during recent ICE raids. In the Monterey Bay Area, 25 people were taken, including in Watsonville, Salinas, Capitola and Seaside.

One individual was stopped by ICE on Rodriguez Street in Watsonville in plain daylight. He was pushed to the ground, his hands were tied around his back, and his feet were bounded while being forced to sign a paper which Migrawatch believes to have been a "willful deportation" document. During a late evening in Capitola, ICE took a father in the presense of his children, and leaving the children behind. In Las Lomas, ICE also took a man from his home. There were other cases where ICE did not appear to have warrants and were picking people up off the streets.

Children are scared to go to school; many people are scared to do anything. In Salinas, parents wait across the street from elementary schools to pick up their children. The U.S. claims to be a free society, but millions of people in our communities are living in a constant state of fear. Migrawatch calls for resisting all immigration enforcement and intimidation activity by ICE agents. Migrawatch encourages local citizens to demand that their city officials provide adequate prior notification to human rights organization of ICE raids, in addition to city sanctuary resolutions.
