Mission Station Police Arrest Woman and Her Two Children - Protest Called For
BRIGADES AGAINST THE RAIDS, a Project of BARRIO UNIDO is calling for a picket on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 5 PM in front of Mission Police Station. The picket is to protest the arrest and probable deportation of a woman who sold strawberries on the corner of 22nd and Valencia Streets on March 21, 2008. The woman's two children were arrested at the same time for attacking the arresting officer.
Six to eight officers arrested a woman and her two children. Immigrant’s rights groups in the city are fearful that they will be deported because ICE is routinely visiting the county jails and deporting “illegal” immigrants. Brigades Against The Raids pointed out in their email to local advocates that the police behavior and the cooperation of the jail officials demonstrates the lie that San Francisco is a “sanctuary city”.
S.F. War on the Poor points out that this arrest is one more example of racism in San Francisco. If the woman was violating any law, it was the law against vending without an expensive license or blocking the sidewalk. Both offences are misdemeanors for which a citation could have been issued. Citations are routinely given to unlicensed white vendors on Fisherman’s Wharf.

By arresting rather than citing them, the arresting officers ensure that they will be handed over to ICE in this "sanctuary".
This picket is not sanctioned by the city and should be seen as an exercise of the rights to assemble and free speech.
Any arrests for other than for violent behavior will violate the U.S. Constitution, whether or not the arrested person is a citizen or an "illegal". Immigrants should exercise caution however, because your right to council will be denied if you are arrested.
