TV Feeds Hate and Fear Toward Immigrants, Report Says

Saturday, May 24, 2008 : U.S. cable television is fueling anti-immigrant sentiment, according to a study published Wednesday, reports EFE news service. The report, Fear and Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News," identifies CNN's Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck, along with Bill O'Reilly of Fox, as having done the most to create "anti-immigrant hysteria."
Karl Frisch of the Media Matters Action Network, which conducted the report, said Dobbs, Beck and O'Reilly offer "a steady diet of fear, anger, and resentment on the topic of illegal immigration." The report details the myths that are being perpetrated in the media, including the alleged connection between crime and immigration; the assertion that undocumented immigrants are a burden on social services; and the "reconquista" (reconquest) myth, which states that there is a movement afoot for Mexico to take over the American Southwest. Viewers of Dobbs' program have also been "told about a mythical explosion of leprosy cases due to illegal immigration, and a mythical epidemic of voter fraud due to illegal immigration," the report said.
