Progressive Politicos Preach to the Choir on the Back Steps of the Church With the Golden
Several “progressive” politicians, including San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin spoke to group of people who obviously already agreed with the premise that rent control was endangered by Proposition 98 and, “Proposition 99 is fine”.
Dutifully chanting when prodded by the speakers, the group of approximately 100(too few to call a crowd) was very well behaved on the back stairs of the city’s palace of power. Obviously poor people seemed totally unaware of the irony of standing on the sidewalk looking up at the guilded edifice. As many such “demonstrators”, they were also unaware of being shown the back door by the powers that be, including the participating progressives.
The front of City Hall is on Van Ness Avenue. God, and/or Newsom forbid that people would protest on the front steps. Too many cars pass by the front door and the occupants might ask questions about what was going on. Hidden at the back door, the demonstrators were invisible to anyone passing the front of our hallowed hall. Consider the number of tourists who might conclude that there is unrest in the city by the bay.
This “demonstration” wasn’t much of a “protest” because it was government sponsored and managed. The very progressives who brought you NOBODY FOR MAYOR, also provided a meaningless exercise in futility at a time when real action is required to prevent enactment of a law to ban rent control.
If the elected progressives really are serious about helping the poor and retaining rent control, they should consider reaching into their pockets that are filled from the public trough. Pay poor people to personally canvas the neighborhoods where people don’t agree with them and talking about the issues in a reasonable manor. Make sure the canvassers are armed with pamphlets that explain the issues in terms of human suffering and needs.
The politicians in San Francisco should be aware that this city is primed for another “Long Hot Summer”.
They are provoking too many factions for peace to prevail very much longer. The denial of the right to free speech that was demonstrated by the Mayor’s manipulation of the route of the olympic torch, the forced relocation of the families who own their homes in Bay View/Hunters Point, immigration, homelessness, cuts in health care and other social services, etc., etc.. A famous man once said that the cause of the violence in the 60s was “rising expectations” and “falling performance“ of social systems. We are at that point now, and some people are saying that’s enough.
In an article published yesterday, “We Don’t Need No Stinking Permits” this writer reported on a real demonstration and referred people to the website for Reclaim the Streets” http://www.reclaimsf.org . The site will refer them to an action that will start with a party in Delores Park at 1P.M. on May 31. Voting on rent control is on June 3.
Reclaim the Streets is one of many groups that are starting up in the city to shout “WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT!!! There is a need for the diverse groups to come together and support each other. The politicos, including the progressives seem bent on turning groups against each other. Anyone who is a member of such a group is being encouraged by S.F. War On The Poor to post their information on: http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/sfwaronthepoor. The poor are the victims of a war waged by politicians backed by developers and others who profit on their misery. The poor, and their allies need to fight back.
