ICE Raid on Kosher Slaughterhouse May Cause Meat Shortage

Wednesday, May 21, 2008 : POSTVILLE, Iowa A May 12th raid by immigration authorities has cut production in the leading Kosher meat processing plant, prompting fears of a meat shortage, reports The Jewish Daily Forward. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained about 400 or the 968 employees of the Iowa plant and charged 154 of them with criminal offenses mostly identity theft, using false social security numbers.
A skeleton crew is struggling to keep up with demand. The impact is expected to be most acute in regions of the country where relatively few people are trying to keep kosher. Labor experts say that it will take months to replace the workforce.
