Conscientious Projector Film Series presents “Voices from Inside”

This award-winning documentary follows filmmaker /theater artist Karina Epperlein into a federal women’s prison. She encourages a racially mixed circle of women to find their own voices through poetry and creative expressions, and meets their children on the outside. This film shatters the conventional stereotypes and is an inspiring experiment in breaking the walls with love. California continues the surge in prison building and the number of women in prison has quadrupled, largely due to a sharp rise in lengthy sentences for nonviolent (especially drug-related) crimes. It is estimated that 80% are mothers, and most of them are single mothers of children who are minors. So on this Mother’s Day weekend we are showing a powerful film on women prisoners and their children. Gloria Steinem said: “Every legislature that lavishes money on building prisons and starves programs that rebuild dignity should be put in a room with this unforgettable story of four women’s lives.”
