While Jews celebrate the founding of Israel as a Jewish state 60 years ago, Palestinians remember 1948 as Al-Nakba (“the Catastrophe”). During the war surrounding Israel’s declaration of statehood, more than half the indigenous Arab population of Palestine fled military action or were forced at gunpoint to leave. The government of Israel took over the refugees’ property, destroyed their villages and would not allow the refugees to return. The Palestinians became stateless. For Palestinians, dispossession is the heart of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
