The conspiracy to divide Bolivia must be denounced

The process of changes in favor of the Bolivian majority is at risk of being brutally restrained. The rise to power of an Indigenous president with unprecedented support in that country and his programs of popular benefits and recovery of the natural resources have had to face the conspiracies of the oligarchy and United States interference from the very beginning.

In recent days the increase in conspiracy has reached its climax. The subversive and unconstitutional actions of the oligarchic groups to try to divide the Bolivian nation reflect the racist and elitist minds of these sectors and constitute a very dangerous precedent not only for the country’s integrity, but for other countries in our region.

History shows with ample eloquence, the terrible consequences that the divisionary and separatist processes supported and induced by foreign interests have had for humanity.

Faced with this situation the signers below would like to express their support for the government of Evo Morales Ayma, for his policies for change and for the sovereign constituent process of the Bolivian people. At the same time we reject the so-called Santa Cruz Autonomy Statute due to its unconstitutionality and the attempt against the unity of a nation of our America.

It seems the author of this article has little gound in reality. I spent the last four months in Santa Cruz. The reality is that Evo Morales is not acting as a President, but a dictator. He insults the opposition at every turn makeing lifelong enemies of millions of people. He has created reacism such that Bolivia has never known and he has forced his legal will on the public in a dramatically dishonest way. Imagine that to get his constitution passed in Congress his followers blocked the entrance of the opposition party for the final vote. Is this democracy? Would this action be tolerated in the United States?

I am quite sure Morales will be removed from office in the near future, perhaps after much violence and bloodshed. He extreme draconian methods of forcing his will no others is wrong and will not survive in even in the medium term.

I spent 2 years in Bolivia, Jonathon.2 years in Santa Cruz, in fact. This article may not represent the average Cruceno viewpoint but it does represent the views of the majority of the population of Bolivia.
Morales is no dictator. Not even Tony Blair could claim to be as respectful of the democratic process as Morales.Much less Bush (though I admit that's not saying much). He took back Bolivia's previously state owned gas company - an election promise - and has ploughed the money into things like education, roadbuilding and healthcare.Previously Bolivia got 18% of the profits from it's own gas.Now the roles are reversed and it gets 82%.What's good for the goose, however, appears not to be as good for the gander and we're now seeing the results.
The Camba are, for the most part, either rich and bigoted - my Judaism was did not mark me out for popularity, I can tell you - or poor, stupefyingly ignorant and, yes, bigoted.Unitel TV once ran a lead story about how the dictator Morales was planning to make it illegal for the crucenos to own arms, but not the Andeans.
People were panicking across santa cruz - even taxi drivers were talking about it to me.It was, of course, an utter lie.The story died but the mud had been thrown and another little bit had stuck.
If you want to understand what's happening there now you need to look at what happened in Spain in the mid 1930s and Chile in the early 70s.In Spain, the fascists were backed by Italy and Germany. In Chile, the US.
Here we go again. If you don't think they're really fascists and that it's just a hyperbolic expression, try looking up Lola Almudevar's report from Sucre for the BBC.The one where swastikas are mentioned.
