EBALDC & Temp Worker Scheme To Cut Down Trees At Effies House
By Lynda Carson April 24, 2008
Oakland - East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation (EBALDC), and temp manager (from Temp Agency) scheme to cut down the trees in front of Effie's House- 829 E. 19th St., Oakland. CA.
On April 24, the temp manager (from temp agency) at Effie's House, let it slip that he plans to have all the trees (40 to 60 years old) cut down in front of Effies House.
Some of the trees are at least 3 stories tall or more, and one of them is a beautiful leafy shade tree. Many in the neighborhood including the tenants and mailman love to park under the tree because it offers protection from the sun and rain at times.
When asked if he (temp manager) had obtained a permit to cut down the trees, or had contacted someone from the City of Oakland to verify whether or not any of the trees to be chopped down were on the endangered species list, Clifford Gatewood (temp manager who refuses to identify what Temp Agency he works for) stated that he did not.
Gatewood even became offensive when he stated that the tenants at Effie's House had no say over the issue of cuting down the trees (there was no meeting to discuss the issue), and he further stated that only the investors in the property had a say about whether or not the trees will be killed. Effie's House is a 20 unit HUD subsidized building in Oakland, which under California state law is required to have a Resident Manager, but currently does not.
Clifford Gatewood (manager) does not reside at Effie's House, and never was a resident at Effie's House. Since 2000, theres been around 15 managers running Effie's House through the years, and Gatewood is another in a long line of managers who are completely out of touch with the residents who actually reside at Effie's House, or the neighbors next door. Clifford is also the first to be a temp manager at the property, that actually is not an EBALDC employee working there since 1997, and appears
Effie's House is in Patricia Kernighan's district in Oakland.
What you can do to help the tenants of Effie's House save the trees in front of their building.
Make calls and send e-mails to Patricia Kernighan's office, to demand that EBALDC does not cut down the trees in front of Effie's House - 829 E. 19th St., Oakland 94606, and call Lynette Jung Lee at EBALDC to tell her to save the trees at Effie's House, and to not have them cut down.
