BEACH IMPEACH and BRAD NEWSHAM FOR CONGRESS!

by Brad Newsham (e-mail repost)
In this e-mail reposted here at INDYBAY.ORG-- Brad Newsham explains that BEACH IMPEACH #5 IS ON! (Thanks to a little help from some friends).

And to top things off-- Brad is ready to challenge Barbara Lee in a race for her Congressional seat (District 9).

Why? Brad believes it is up to us to demand IMPEACHMENT-- if our sitting representatives don't!

Dear Everyone,

BOTTOM LINE: On Wednesday I filed the paperwork necessary to have
myself certified as a write-in candidate in California's June 3
Democratic primary election. This primary will decide who will be the
Democratic Party's candidate from my home district (California's Ninth District) n November's election for the US House of Representatives.

That seat is currently held by Representative Barbara Lee, for whom I
have voted for in every election since I moved to Oakland from San
Francisco in 1994. Back in 2001, Representative Lee was the ONLY
member of either the House or the Senate to vote against giving Bush
permission to do any old unimaginable thing at all. Lee's lone-wolf
vote was gutsy and historic and no one appreciated it more than I did.

In the years since, I can not remember ever disagreeing with
Representative Lee's position on any issue -- except one, but it's a
fundamental issue for me, and perhaps for you: the impeachment
of Bush and Cheney. For me, this issue is so important that it eclipses all others. And after three years of discussions with Representative Lee's staff (mostly) and with Representative Lee herself (occasionally), I have concluded that Lee's ideas and my ideas about the need to hold our leaders accountable for a long list of crimes -- crimes that have been committed in my name and yours -- are irreconcilable worlds apart.

I saw two viable choices: I could keep trying to plead the merits of
the case; or, this being a democracy, I could run for the office
myself. Eighteen months ago, I faced a similar dilemma: Keep whining
about what the leaders of the impeachment movement should be doing, or start something myself. In the coming weeks I'll be posting more information about my candidacy. But for tonight all I'm going to say is:

-- I am humbly and sincerely asking for your vote.

-- I am not asking, nor will I accept, any money for this campaign
(if I win the primary, or if I choose to run again in the general
election, that may change).

-- In order to complete the Secretary of State's certification of my
candidacy I need the signatures of 39 more registered Democrats who live in California's Ninth Congressional District (map).

If you'd like to sign -- and I hope that you will -- I'll have my
candidate petition with me when I attend tomorrow night's sure-to-be
fabulous...

IMPEACHMENT TOWN HALL MEETING, GRAND LAKE THEATRE, OAKLAND, THURSDAY,
APRIL 24, 7-9 PM

I hope you can join me and David Swanson (founder of afterdowningstreet.org) and a full roster of impeachment
movement leaders (Ellsberg, Sheehan, Golub, Sweet, Benjamin, and
others). This special event -- "Are Peace and Impeachment Possible?" -- is at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland. If I don't get all the signatures I need Thursday night, I'll have my petitions with me again on Saturday morning when I show up at dawn to get ready for the sure-to-be fabulous...

I hope you can join me and (we're hoping) thousands of other
impeachment activists for Beach Impeach 5. If you want to see
what Beach Impeach 1, 2, 3, and 4 looked like, go here. If you can come, please register, but either way, please come, and please spread the word if you will.

MY FRIEND ANDREW BOYD

I can't stop myself from sharing this little bit of fun with you.
Yesterday afternoon I opened my copy of The Sun magazine, and the first thing I noticed was an article by my friend Andrew Boyd. I met Andrew several years ago when Andrew was an inspiring political activist, the founder of the hysterical Billionaires for Bush, and I was in my travel-writer incarnation. Now here I am up to my eyeballs in political activism, and there Andrew is in The Sun (a monthly addiction of mine -- no matter that I received a form letter rejection from them just last week) with a piece of top-notch travel literature -- "Pilgrimage to Nowhere." I read it through without stopping -- if you get The Sun, don't miss it.

And then last night, as I was scrolling through and voting on
MoveOn.org's collection of 30-second Obama ads, I came upon this one, which gave me goose bumps in 30 seconds, and which was created, I noticed, by none other than Andrew Boyd and friends! Check it out. Please.

Hope to see you very soon,

Brad, do you have a clue when Bush leaves office? Looked at a calendar lately? Do you have any idea when you would be sworn in, even if you won?

Check the calendar again, Brad.

It's the"don't try" "don't bother"crowd that put us in the messes we're in-- and can put us in bigger messes later.

The democrats in power-- including Barbara Lee-- have failed their duty to uphold te Constitution.

Quick Update -- Beach Impeach 5 -- Run for Congress yourself, please!
Mon, 28 Apr 2008

Hi everyone,

I'm leaving town for the whole week this morning (no cell, no
computer), and this'll have to be quick.

THE APRIL 24 TOWN HALL IMPEACHMENT MEETING AT THE GRAND LAKE

Great success. Was fantastic to be in the presence of 300 or more
people who all feel the way I do (and probably you too) about the
criminals in the White House. David Swanson from
afterdowningstreet.org is a tremendous young force. He proposed
something I'd never heard before, and which I wish I had thought of.
I'll paraphrase: "Pelosi wants to support the troops by giving Bush
$178 billion dollars. That's more than $1 million dollars per soldier
in Iraq. You want to seriously support the troops? Why not just give
each of them $1 million? If they want to give it to the Maliki
government, they can. If they want to help rebuild Iraq with it, ok,
they can. If they want to buy a plane ticket home and go to college
they can." I thought this was an absolutely brilliant way of framing
things.

And given the lead story in this morning's San Francisco Chronicle

("Dems giving in on war funds") -- about Nancy Pelosi trying to gift
wrap this bundle of money for Bush and Cheney -- and get it to them
early... well... Is this what we had in mind when we worked so hard to
get her and the rest of the Democrats elected to Congress in 2006? It
wasn't what I had in mind. If I were in Congress I would vote against
it, I would filibuster. I would introduce impeachment motions every
day.

YOUR CAMPAIGN FOR CONGRESS

A lot of politicians say, "This isn't my campaign -- this is YOUR
campaign." Well, I'm a different kind of politician. I'm not just
SAYING this is YOUR campaign. I'm asking you to go down to the
Registrar of Voters and register to run for Congress yourself. Be my
running mate! If you have ten minutes to fill out the paperwork; if
you can collect 40 valid signatures on a petition by May 20 (do you
know 40 registered Democrats?); and if you can pay the registration
fee of zero dollars and zero cents, you will become a Secretary of
State certified write in candidate in the June 3 primary.

MAKE this YOUR campaign. Not in some b.s. way, but FOR REAL. If you
are serious about wanting impeachment to happen, run for Congress WITH
ME.

There are 53 Congressional districts in California. If we can get one
person (or more) to be a certified write-in candidate in each
district, perhaps we can crack the mainstream media's impeachment news
boycott. If you live anywhere in California, it's simple. Here is all
you need to do. Please go down to your Registrar of Voters office and
ask to look at the paperwork you'll need to become a write-in
candidate in the June 3 primary election. I would ask you to look at
the oath which candidates must sign, saying only that they will swear
to "defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic"
and I would ask you to then contemplate the things that our elected
leaders have allowed to happen in our names, and sit there and think
about it and see if it doesn't make your blood froth!

And then register. It takes ten minutes.

I'll be back in contact a week from today. If you want to run, I'll
help walk/talk you through the process. And if you want to run in my
district with me, please, climb aboard. What have you got to lose?

BEACH IMPEACH 5

Saturday was a spectacular weather day -- typical ethereal Beach
Impeach weather -- 70 degrees, still, cloudless. The crowd was as
enthusiastic as ever (two veterans of all five Beach Impeach told me,
"This was the best one yet..."), but it was also the smallest crowd
yet. There were somewhere between 200 and 300 people (I counted 200
and then estimated the rest -- 250 is a good estimate) and we had to
get creative about the imagery. By the end of the week, when I get
back into "contact" range, I hope that some imagery will have been
posted at http://www.beachimpeach.org. But Beach Impeach 5 will not have the
impact that others have had. I enjoyed myself in the same way and just
as fully as I have at all the others, but I enjoyment is merely a
possible byproduct of these events -- not the main point. But you take
what you get, you move onward.

WEST COAST PORTS BEING STRUCK BY UNIONS ON MAY 1

I'm sorry I'm going to be away for this event. Dock workers are going
to shut down West Coast ports on May 1. Please participate.

Out the door...
