Are Sunnis Still Resisting?
ANBAR — Although Sunni fighters have decreased attacks against US-led foreign troops in the past months, they say their resistance hasn’t died down and will continue until the foreign troops withdraw.
The resistance features at least a dozen major organizations and perhaps as many as 40 distinct groups. These groups are subdivided into countless smaller cells.
Groups such Al-Faruq Brigades, a militant wing of the Islamic Movement in Iraq, the Mujahideen of the Victorious Sect, the Mujahideen Battalions of the Salafi Group of Iraq, Muhammad Army, Jihad Brigades Cells and White Flags insist the fighting will only stop when their land is purged from foreign forces.
Leaflets distributed this week in many cities of Anbar province, the main stronghold for Sunni resistance, called Iraqis to join forces to drive US troops out after the Bush administration decided to delay troop cuts.
"Each day more people join our forces as they are tired of the daily promises that US troops with leave Iraq," says Abu Nur Rabia’a, a spokesperson for White Flags.
According to him, training is continuing in many provinces and new weapons are coming in.
"We continue to receive financial support from many admirers of our work in Iraq and neighboring countries. Of course we cannot discuss this in details but we can say that many Iraqis are still determined to end this dirty and unfair occupation."
Abu Omar Rawi, a senior official at Muhammad Army, said their attacks against the foreign troops are continuing.
"On March 24 we attacked a US base in Fallujah killing two Americans," he said.
He added that two days latter his group attacked American troops conducting their daily security check of the city's outskirts.
