DR. NEMESIO PRUDENTE, EDUCATOR AND ACTIVIST
With profound sorrow, we in the Alliance Philippines (AJLPP) and the First Quarter Storm Network (FQSN)) in the United States condole with the family and friends of our dear comrade and fellow activist “Doc” Nemesio Prudente who recently passed away at the ripe age of 81 in the Philippines.
Doc Prudente is an ardent nationalist. While he was the president of the Philippine College of Commerce (PCC), the campus became the bastion of nationalism and one of the cradle of the renowned First Quarter Storm (FQS) in the 1970’s.

He was no ordinary college president. He manned picket lines in Malacanang to demand improvements and benefits for PCC students. He marched against US imperialist abuses in the US Embassy,. He was arrested with the students when the military and police raided PCC during the FQS. He supported the student’s organizations in PCC, the Samahang Molabe. The KAMANYANG Cultural Group and most of all the Movement for a Democratic Philippines (MDP), the progenitor of BAYAN Philippines.
The military and the state police never forgave him. He was arrested and jailed several times during the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus in 1971 and during martial law in 1972.
They suspect him of supporting the Philippine Liberation Movement (PLM) and the Gerilyang Anak Pawis (GAK) or the city urban partisans in 1982 (some of them joined the NPA in Cagayan Valley in 1983) The militarist in the police and the military made several attempts on his life after the EDSA people’s power revolution of 1986.
Yet, Dr. Prudente continue to be a staunch human rights fighter and a supporter of the peace process. He supported the NDFP wholeheartedly and made the education of the masses his living tribute to the people.
He will live forever in the hall of our heroes and in the memory and hearts of our people.
