Human Rights Torch arrives in San Francisco

by Josh Wolf (web [at] joshwolf.net)
On April 5, 2008 the Human Rights Torch arrived in San Francisco after traveling across the world beginning last year in Greece. The torch is a celebration of human rights and was established by a Falun Gong advocacy group in protest of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

In this video, Supervisor Chris Daly, '68 Olympic medalist John Carlos and the organizers of the event explain why the run was organized and the history of Olympic politics.

Some 200 peasants gathered on 4/5/08 in Union Square according to the Chronicle, featuring the idiot Democrat Chris Daly (clearly looking for a new job as he cannot run for supervisor again) and the superstitious peasants Falun Gong, to promote the CIA's Dalai Lama in the latest attempt to attack China, earlier attempts being the US Wars against Korea and Vietnam. (The CIA is Wall Street; the US capitalist class). The CIA also put up multi-colored posters in town, at least one of which was in Chinatown, advertising this anti-Chinese event, and distributed multi-color (expensive) tabloids at tables (run by middle class whites) near and in parks around Chinatown. No one took the tabloids or stopped at the racist peasants' tables. These expensive posters and tabloids are signs that this is a US government/CIA sponsored event, not a grassroots concern at all. This story is not popular among readers of the Chronicle; the death of actor Charlton Heston is. The Chinese-American community of San Francisco, while officially 30%, is more likely 50% of San Francisco (that is 50% Asian-American, mostly Chinese-American). In the Northeast sector (Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, Chinatown, Polk Gulch), where the anti-Chinese racists are doing their business, the schools, swimming pools and all other community sites are patronized 99-100% by Chinese-Americans, the family residents of the area. The Chinese-American community organizations have loudly condemned in writing the reactionary, peasant Democrats sitting on the Board of Supervisors for the latest anti-Chinese racism in official San Francisco. At the beginning of the 20th Century, this official anti-Chinese racism consisted of denying Chinese the right to attend SF public schools. Unofficially, the white population perpetrated heinous riots against the Chinese workers of San Francisco. As the Sunday Chronicle interviews with the Chinese-American community state, for the Chinese descendants around the world, including San Francisco, the fact that the Olympics can be held in China is a sign of an advance over the 19th and 20th century colonial status perpetrated by the US and Europe that China experienced, with all of its misery. See
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/04/05/MN4K10089S.DTL Obviously, if the CIA sponsored racist peasants have a complaint about the province of China for 800 years known as Tibet, they can take their claims to the World Court instead of attacking the children of the world who wish to realize their Olympic dreams. The Chinese-American community will be present in the TENS OF THOUSANDS to welcome the Olympic torch, and most other Americans, including this writer, strongly support the Olympic torch. WE ARE ASHAMED and horrified at the anti-Chinese racism and provincialism of the San Francisco Democratic Party, all paid for by the CIA, and WE ARE THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF SAN FRANCISCO RESIDENTS.
by only the uneducated
The purpose of the Olympic torch protests is to educate the public about not just the Chinese occupation of Tibet, but of Chinas role in arming the oppressive Myanmar government, and of China's role as the main player in the genocide of Sudan.

Free Free Tibet! End the Occupation!!!!!
by and there's willful ignorance.
Because as invaders of Iraq and oppressors of Afghanistan, Americans are in NO POSITION to lecture other regimes on human rights abuses.

Are you old enough to remember how the US used to lecture the USSR about its "Evil Empire" occupation of Afghanistan? Tell ya what, Afghan women wore no burqas under the Afghani Communist regime....
by Free Tibet End the occupation
Some quick facts for you

GENOCIDE

According to the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December, 1948, human groups against which genocide is recognized as a crime in international law are national, racial, ethnic and religious. The COMMITTEE found that acts of genocide had been committed in Tibet in an attempt to destroy the Tibetans as a religious group, and that such acts are acts of genocide independently of any conventional obligation. The COMMITTEE did not find that there was sufficient proof of the destruction of Tibetans as a race, nation or ethnic group as such by methods that can be regarded as genocide in international law. The evidence established four principal facts in relation to genocide:

(a) that the Chinese will not permit adherence to and practice of Buddhism in Tibet;

(b) that they have systematically set out to eradicate this religious belief in Tibet;

(c) that in pursuit of this design they have killed religious figures because their religious belief and practice was an encouragement and example to others; and

(d) that they have forcibly transferred large numbers of Tibetan children to a Chinese materialist environment in order to prevent them from having a religious upbringing.

The COMMITTEE therefore found that genocide had been committed against this religious group by such methods.

HUMAN RIGHTS

The COMMITTEE examined evidence in relation to human rights within the framework of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The COMMITTEE in considering the question of human rights took into account that economic and social rights are as much a part of human rights as are civil liberties. They found that the Chinese communist authorities in Tibet had violated human rights of both kinds.

The COMMITTEE came to the conclusion that the Chinese authorities in Tibet had violated the following human rights, which the COMMITTEE considered to be the standards of behavior in the common opinion of civilized nations:

ARTICLE 3

The right to life, liberty and security of person was violated by acts of murder, rape and arbitrary imprisonment.

ARTICLE 5

Torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment were inflicted on the Tibetans on a large scale.

ARTICLE 9

Arbitrary arrests and detention were carried out.

ARTICLE 12

Rights of privacy, of home and family life were persistently violated by the forcible transfer of members of the family and by indoctrination turning children against their parents. Children from infancy upwards were removed contrary to the wishes of the parents.

ARTICLE 13

Freedom of movement within, to and from Tibet was denied by large-scale deportations.

ARTICLE 16

The voluntary nature of marriage was denied by forcing monks and lamas to marry.

ARTICLE 17

The right not to be arbitrarily deprived of private property was violated by the confiscation and compulsory acquisition of private property otherwise than on payment of just compensation and in accordance with the freely expressed wish of the Tibetan People.

ARTICLE 18

Freedom of thought, conscience and religion were denied by acts of genocide against Buddhists in Tibet and by other systematic acts designed to eradicate religious belief in Tibet.

ARTICLE 19

Freedom of expression and opinion was denied by the destruction of scriptures, the imprisonment of members of the Mimang group and the cruel punishments inflicted on critics of the regime.

ARTICLE 20

The right of free assembly and association was violated by the suppression of the Mimang movement and the prohibition of meetings other than those called by the Chinese.

ARTICLE 21

The right to democratic government was denied by the imposition from outside of rule by and under the Chinese Communist Party.

ARTICLE 22

The economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for the dignity and free development of the personality of man were denied. The economic resources of Tibet were used to meet the needs of the Chinese. Social changes were adverse to the interests of the majority of the Tibetan people. The old culture of Tibet, including its religion, was attacked in an attempt to eradicate it.

ARTICLE 24

The right to reasonable working conditions was violated by the exaction of labour under harsh and ill-paid conditions.

ARTICLE 25

A reasonable standard of living was denied by the use of the Tibetan economy to meet the needs of the Chinese settling in Tibet.

ARTICLE 26

The right to liberal education primarily in accordance with the choice of parents was denied by compulsory indoctrination, sometimes after deportation, in communist philosophy.

ARTICLE 27

The Tibetans were not allowed to participate in the cultural life of their own community, a culture which the Chinese have set out to destroy.

Check out Li Onesto's latest articles on Tibet. Gives a much more thorough explanation of what's going on...and NO, China is NOT Communist anymore!

"From 1951-1976, with the victory of the Chinese communist revolution, Tibet became part of the revolutionary process of building socialism with sweeping and liberating economic and social changes. Then since 1976, with the restoration of capitalism in China, the Tibetan people have been subjected to exploitation, subjugation as a people, and suppression of their culture and fast-paced capitalist development that threatens the environment."

In addition to the fact that San Francisco is about 50% Asian-American, mostly Chinese American (that's 400,000 Asian-American residents of San Francisco), the public schools of San Francisco are also overwhelmingly non-white with the population for 2007 being as follows: 32% Chinese American, 9% other Asian Americans, 22% Latino, 13% African American, 12% other nonwhite/non-European descendants and 95 white, European non-Hispanic descendants! The anti-Chinese San Francisco Board of Supervisors is in stark contrast to these figures ethnically. Of the 11 supervisors, 1 is Chinese American, 1 is Latino, 1 is African American, 1 is other non-European descent, and the rest of the swine are white, non-Latino European descents, 7 in total. This entire Board of Supervisors is so despicable that they should all RESIGN IMMEDIATELY. They clearly do not represent the people of San Francisco at all.

There is also the daily racist insult the Chinese-Americans in the Northeast sector experience daily, paid for with our tax dollars, which apparently are so few these days that they plan to cut the hours of the public swimming pools and many other services. That is, the City of San Francisco paints the colors of the Italian national flag, green, white and red, on the light poles the entire length of Columbus Avenue, and some of the side streets, and they are repainted every single year to "celebrate" Columbus Genocide week in October so as to boost the profits of the handful of Italian recipe restaurants in the area, staffed mostly with Latino workers, while the Navy's Blue Death, which is supported by the overwhelming majority of this same reactionary Board of Supervisors but opposed by the majority of San Francisco voters, roars over the heads of the people of San Francisco, especially over the Northeast sector. NORTH BEACH HAS BEEN A CHINESE IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY FOR OVER 50 YEARS, and Chinatown, the area around Lower Grant, has BEEN A CHINESE IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY FOR OVER 100 YEARS. Most of the white, non-Hispanic, European descendants left San Francisco in the 1950s, and that includes, but is not limited to Italian Americans, Jewish Americans, Russian Americans, Greek Americans, German Americans, Scandinavian Americans and Irish Americans. Most European immigration to this country ended in the 1940s and as the education level of women increased, the number of children those women had decreased, fortunately for them and humanity. THE CONTINUAL PERPETUATION OF WHITE RACISM IN THE FACE OF THE REALITY OF BEING A VERY SMALL MINORITY IS EVEN MORE INFURIATING AND EMBARRASSING TO ALL OF US WHITES WHO OPPOSE IT. It is long overdue the Democrat-Republican Party be run out of San Francisco. Until then, three cheers for the Olympic peace torch and the Beijing Olympics. May the athletes of the world participating in the Olympics enjoy each other's company, learn about each other's cultures and realize their dreams of winning Olympic medals.
by Free Tibet
The Tibetans don't oppose the Chinese because they are Asian. They oppose the Chinese because their people are getting killed. 1.2 million Tibetans have been murdered since 1950.
The Tibetans are an Asiatic people as well- why are you thinking about this in terms of white vs Asian? The Tibetans just want the right of self determination. What is wrong with that?
by and then there's monarchist apologetics.
After all, many Americans were against division from England...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalist_%28American_Revolution%29

And what was wrong with that? Yet, they're not exactly celebrated in American history texts... because the changes brought about by the American Revolution are now widely seen as good.

Unrest in Tibet provides nothing more than anecdotal evidence of anything like an opinion within Tibet that the Chinese Revolution was not on balance a good thing. The unification of opposition forces around the Dalai Lama, of all people, in fact tend to suggest that such sentiments are more along the variety of the residual sympathy any monarch retains after dethronement (which is why the Soviets killed the Romanovs, which anti-communists go on forever about as representing human rights 'abuses,' against the poor, poor Romanov family... conveniently ignoring all the dead Jews, for example, upon which the Romanov throne rested).

So, ya just can't win the opinion of some people with a revolution. That doesn't make revolution as such bad or wrong. And as for the arrival of the democratic revolution in Tibet, in the form of the PRC, you've yet to really exhibit any evidence that it was or is wrong, except for that bloody shirt you keep waving, a shirt that conveniently covers atrocities by ethnic Tibetans against ethnic Chinese-- violence you have yet even to acknowledge.
For those who missed it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_shirt

To draw a quick parallel, say that white citizens in the USA were running riot in the streets, chasing down and killing any black people they could get their hands on...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Race_Riot

Would the police, the national guard, or even the US Army be anti-democratic to stop such unrest? What if they came from another region? What if they came to preclude the restoration of whites-only, i.e. "majoritarian" rule?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Rock_Integration_Crisis

Such are the contradictions your blithe "free Tibet" rhetoric try vainly to cover. However, such troubling contradictions don't go away for ignoring them, except in FOXland and CIAWorld.

Nice try though.
Only 9% of San Francisco public school students are white, European, non-Hispanic descendants. And the private schools are also a minority white, European, non-Hispanic descendants. It is interesting that the comments for the most part have nothing to do with San Francisco, the location of the North American stop for the Olympic peace torch, and the venue of the racist election frauding Democratic Party of San Francisco and its racist anti-Chinese resolution that has nothing to do with getting anything done in this City. What the Democrats of San Francisco do, starting with election frauding "mayor" Gavin Newsom, is attack the homeless and promote racist gentrification schemes in Bayview Hunters Point, cut back on services such as swimming pools while promoting racist illusions that North Beach has something to do with Italy by using our tax dollars to paint the light poles the colors of the Italian flag every single year to promote celebrating Columbus Genocide week and supporting the Navy's Blue Death flights over San Francisco, terrorizing all of us while wasting tax dollars and oil. All politics are local and it is the local scene that is the outrage. In fact, the local scene is best described as Nazi USA, and it did not just start with Bush; it started with the genocide of Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans, and the vicious exploitation of the labor of all of us. There has never been a period in American history when there has been anything to be proud of, certainly no democracy for the workingclass. This backward country has never had any moral authority and can never have any moral authority so long as the private profit system exists. It is 125 years behind Germany since it has no socialized medicine; it is decades behind most of the world in banning the death penalty and the prison-punishment system. Its anti-labor government claims that if they had not bailed out Bear Stearns, the US economy would have collapsed. Rather than pointing the finger at any other country, it is long over due that we organize the unorganized so the US workingclass can finally put an end to the private profit system that is destroying our society and the planet.
by thats a racist assumption
Many of the Chinese in America LEFT their country because of Chinese policies and oppression- just people they are Chinese doesn't mean they support the rape of Tibet or the slaughter of Buddhist monks in Myanmar.
Its a racist assumption that they do
by marginalized populations, workers, etc..
Who has the most sweatshops in Asia? Most likely China comes in the top ten, if not number one. All the Wal-mart discounts in the U.S. are a direct result of China's sweatshops. To claim China as a worker's state is as foolish as calling the U.S. a functional democracy where the people elect their governments. Just because the U.S. is an imperialist power that enslaves and commits genocide people, that does not imply that China is not committing the same crimes themselves. If anything, the GW Bush regime has been excessively lenient with the Chinese government's human rights violations (sweatshop workers, rural farmers, neighboring Tibet, Falun gong, etc..) simply because they are vital trade partners and poor li'l Wal-mart would go under if those Chinese sweatshops stopped sending their products to the good ol' U.S. of A...

China, U.S. and Sudanese oil deposits; Here's a perfect example of how two 'rival' empires battling for global positioning can bring hell of civil war and genocide to a region, specifically Darfur. Between the Chinese government funding the Sudanese government in Khartoum who then commands the "Janjaweed militias" and the U.S./Israeli governments secretly supplying weapons to the Darfurian rebels, both sides are shedding the blood of innocent Africans in the quest to gain the upper hand of the petroleum deposits under Darfurian soils..

Whatever status people have in Tibet, the Chinese government has no right to impose their authoritarian atheist agenda on the Tibetans. Looking at the background of the Soviet Union and their attempts to assimilate all the diverse tribal groups in the rural Russian hinterlands into an athiest "worker's state" monoculture, this was one of their greatest failings outside their attempted invasion of Afganistan (back in the day when Taliban received U.S. support). The failure of this policy of forced inclusion is most evident in the Stalinist purges or ethnic cleansing of Jews, Christians, Muslims and pagans who did not assimilate to the atheist monoculture..

Converting an indigenous trade and barter economy into corporate capitalism with perpetual economic "growth" is not a good idea either, and in some ways a global communist state would be better. However, if this new form of communism cannot be inclusive of diverse indigenous cultures without demanding forced assimilation, it will also fail. The corporate capitalist model will fail if it does not allow for ecology to be sustained and their continuous short term shareholder profit model isn't dropped and replaced by something more similar to an even leveled trade and barter system, where "growth" does not need to be continuous, other than the natural growth of trees, plants, animals fish, people etc.. as interdependent units that cannot exist without the other. This is the lesson that capitalism needs to learn if it wishes to survive as a viable economic system..

Again we'll return to a simpler form of trade and barter economics and some form of regional self-governance similar to indigenous tribal systems pre-contact. The legacy of destruction and ecological plunder is usually correlated with the coming of a system of imperialism, whether the Spartans, Romans, British, U.S. or China..

BTW, the early Chinese imperialists got a reminder of how quickly empire's can fall following a brief visit from Ghengis Khan and the Mongolian horseriders. This year at the Olympics these Chinese imperialists may get some visits from a horse of a different color..
