Labor backs call by medical students for universal health care

by James Thompson via PWW
HOUSTON — About 1,000 medical students and their supporters rallied here at city hall March 14 to demand healthcare for all. The event was organized by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) as part of its annual convention and supported by the local SEIU and Justice for Janitors movement. The crowd was made up of medical students from around the country and labor union members.
Participants were diverse and included men and women of all ethnic and cultural groups. One speaker called for a “revolution in health care.” Many speakers and attendees asserted that “we should be able to treat patients without bias as regards to their ability to pay.”

Participants at the opening of the rally chanted, “Hey, Bush, don’t you know, single payer is the way to go…Whose nation? Our nation.”

Houston City Council Member Peter Brown (D) called for people to register to vote and change the political landscape in the upcoming elections. He noted that Houston has the most advanced medical technology in the country and the “lousiest health care in the country” due to poor access to health care. He called for a movement to “fix the broken system.”

Speakers extolled the solidarity of workers and students participating in the rally.

Two fourth-year medical students from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Jessica Dalby and Stephanie Wuest, expressed strong support for the goals of the rally.

Dalby stated, “I think it’s inspiring. I support a single payer health insurance system. I think single payer is the only way to go because we have to cut out the health insurance companies. They provide no benefit. They only add to the cost. Thirty-one cents of every dollar goes to overhead for the health insurance companies.”

The problem remains . . . that coverage does not matter when there is OUTRIGHT DENAIL of healthcare.

The following can be found in TMB file 08-2285 vs Susan Backes et al.

Synopsis:

Complainant went to Northwest Health Center (NW HC) for a duly scheduled office visit with a Dr. Backes on Jan 9, 2008.

At this appointment, Complainant was shocked and stunned when Dr. Backes committed an outright denial of healthcare. And gloated, nodded vigorously, grinned, and said the words, “Fuck You.”

This conduct was all the more offensive, as Dr. Backes had full awareness that such outright denial put Complainant’s life at risk, and had Complainant died, Dr. Backes would have committed murder.

But everything about Dr. Backes’ conduct expressed a sense of security in the knowledge she could get away with doing so.

Complainant then in good faith and due diligence filed a formal complaint with the NW HC medical director, Lisa Danek.

Danek made no attempt to resolve the matter.

Complainant then duly filed with the NW HC hospital director, Sue Bryan.

Sue Bryan made no attempt to resolve the matter.

Complainant then duly filed with the Harris County Hospital District (HCHD) Board, which oversees the NW HC.

Again, no response.

Complainant then duly filed with the Texas Medical Board (TMB).

Still getting nowhere.

The TMB came under investigation by a Joint House Committee Charge because they were getting too many Complaints about bad doctors, and yet doing nothing about it. So the TMB appears to have a history of abdicating its duty to protect the public.

The TMB’s excuse was to make the claim that there was a dearth of licensed doctors in Texas, so Texans simply have to put up with the bad ones or there won’t be enough at all.

Bunk: If the TMB fulfilled its mandate, and revoked the bad doctors‘ licenses, the good doctors would not lose their morale, become corrupt, and join the ranks of the bad doctors.

Things deteriorated so much, Backes twice failed to pay her license renewal fee. (Use the TMB website search function at http://www.tmb.state.tx.us and enter Susan Elizabeth Backes, Lic. G2635 to verify this. If this info has mysteriously disappeared by the time you check this, provide your incoming fax # to a_artemis9 [at] yahoo.com -the Complainant - with a request for a copy of that printout directly off of the TMB site.)

TMB is still dragging its feet in moving forward with legal proceedings against the parties involved.

There you have it: COMPLETELY FULL COVERAGE - Yet no ACTUAL healthcare at all.
