A BAROQUE BEATLES EXPERIENCE
Brian Staufenbiel (tenor), the Kirby Chamber Choir, with
Lux Musica, Annette Bauer (recorder)
and other guest instrumentalists
Sunday, April 6, 2008 at 7:30 PM ~ UCSC Music Center Recital Hall
This concert presents a joyful celebration of music by Bach and the Beatles. Our program includes arrangements of Bach favorites by the Swingle Singers — performed by the prize-winning Kirby vocal ensemble, alongside 'baroque instrumentals' based on famous Beatles tunes — performed by a period instrument ensemble (recorder, 2 flutes, string quartet, and continuo). Drafted by the festival's artistic director Linda Burman-Hall, this unique concert presents the cross-over point between the baroque roots of 'classical' music and the legendary songs and musical style of the Beatles.
PROGRAM INFORMATION: Whereas the sudden rise in popularity of the Beatles and their music represented a generational and cultural rift to some, this same phenomena was eyed with curiosity and delight by some studious historical musicologists of the 1960s. Our program brings to life The 'Baroque Beatles Experience' from two different musical sides. Performing music of the Beatles in a 'baroque' context, renowned tenor Brian Staufenbiel and the instrumental ensemble illustrate the proximity of the famous band's songs to historical forms of classical music. Entirely instrumental arrangements in modern and historical styles complement these selections. Kirby Choir in turn offers 20th-century vocal arrangements of music by J.S. Bach and choral settings of Beatles' songs. In accordance with this season's theme, our concert unites the musical language of historical and contemporary 'musical legends.' Performing are: vocalists Brian Staufenbiel (tenor) and the Kirby Chamber Choir (Drew Lewis, conductor), with instrumentalists Linda Burman-Hall (harpsichord/director), Annette Bauer (recorder), Lars Johannesson & Alissa Roedig (flutes), Joe Edelberg & David Sego (violins), Amy Haltom (viola), Amy Brodo (cello), Stan Poplin (bass), and percussion.
