Wrongly Deported U.S. Citizen Leads to Civil Lawsuit

Friday, February 29, 2008 : Los Angeles— An ACLU-led civil lawsuit against the federal government was presented February 27, in Los Angeles County Superior Court, for the deportation of Pedro Guzman, an American citizen, wrongly sent to Mexico last August. Guzman, who has documented mental problems, was deported to Mexico by the United States government last May but three months later was arrested by ICE officers for trying re-enter the United States.
Guzman’s case was an “isolated incident,” according to Virginia Kice, ICE West Coast spokeswoman. Guzman reportedly told ICE officers he was born in Mexico and signed an agreement for his voluntary departure. Guzman was born in Los Angeles, and is now with his mother receiving medical treatment and recovering slowly. Guzman’s mother, Maria Carbajal is working with the ACLU because she says she hopes to prevent other families from going through her experience.
