Save Rent Control Update & Upcoming Tenant Events

by SF Tenants Union/Save Rent Control
As we fight to save rent control, we can’t forget that what we really need to do is strengthen and expand rent control. See here for details on a bunch of stuff happening in the next four days on both fronts.
Friday, February 22

Sen. Carole Migden is introducing legislation to require the replacement demolished rent controlled units with an equal number of rent controlled units. This is an amendment to the Costa Hawkins law which currently exempts any new construction from rent control. Under her amendments, when rent controlled units are demolished—like at Trinity Plaza—they will be replace with rent controlled units. Join us for a press conference announcing this legislation on Friday, 2/22, 11 AM on the steps of City Hall (Civic Center side)

Saturday, February 23: 2 Events

CitiApartments Tenants Meeting Saturday, 2/23, Noon to 2 at Central City SRO Collaborative, 259 Hyde St. (at Eddy). CitiApartments/Skyline tenants are gathering for a citywide convention to learn about the CitiStop campaign and to connect with other tenants and strategize plans for fighting SF’s most notorious landlord

Save Rent Control Voter Registration Drive, Saturday 2/23, 10 AM at SF Tenants Union, 558 Capp St.The Save Rent Control campaign will be registering tenants to vote once again this Saturday. People will be going out to large apartment buildings, where our contacts will meet them, and go door to door to talk to tenants and register those who are not registered. It may rain, so this will be a nice dry way to go door to door.

Monday, February 25

Apartment Sales Disclosure Hearing, Monday, 2/25, 1 PM at City Hall, Room 263. Legislation requiring sellers and buyers of apartment buildings to tell tenants in those buildings what their rights are will be heard at the Board of Supervisors Land Use Committee. We need people to show up and show their support, either by testifying or just by showing up.
