Tree Sit is Resupplied Despite Heavy Police Presence

by tristan
Police could not stop people from sending supplies to tree sit in Oak Grove.

On Tuesday a arborist hired by the University climbed into several tree sits and cut down tarps and lines as well as supplies. Th next day (February 20) people gather for a press conference and supply action. There was a large police presence and police barricades around where the supplying usually takes place. Police were on guard to keep everyone away. The press conference went ahead. One man spoke of the danger that the arborist had caused, during his quick rampage, when he cut ropes connecting the tree sits. He did not pull them down or mark them in any way. Later a tree sitter tried to go across on a rope and would have fallen if the rope had not snagged on a water jug. The speaker also pointed out how the University's spokesman claimed the action was for "health and safety" and yet endangered people's lives. Others then spoke and the tree sitters themselves, from ropes above the fence spoke about their safety concerns.

Then it was time to supply the trees. people gathered but the crowd was small and more police had come. Then tree sitters and those on the ground moved quickly to another tree that overhangs the sidewalk. Tree sitters lowered a rope and food was being attached when the police moved in. An intense scuffle began as the police tried to clear the sidewalk. People had linked arms and shouted that the University has repeatedly said, in public statements, that they are not stopping food and water from going to the tree sit (an obvious lie but useful to us). Police used pain compliance and footballer style force but after a few minutes could not break people's will to resist. The police backed off and the food and water was hauled up into the trees.

We had won again. Every time the University or police try to stop or destroy the tree sit we turn it to our advantage.

Please continue to support the tree sit. Weekly resupply actions need people on Sundays at 2:00.

by ain't an old growth
Isn't an old growth redwood or doug fir, but still nice to see the resistance. Thanks for the imagery for those who can't be there to bear witness! Stay strong and keep the issue and debate alive and kicking!!!

The crowd is small because NO ONE CARES about 4 cracked out bums sitting in trees and defecating in buckets......LOOK AT THE PHOTOS. THERE'S 31,000 STUDENTS AT UC BERKELEY AND THERE ISN'T A SINGLE STUDENT IN THOSE PHOTOS. WHY? BECAUSE NO ONE CARES AND NO ONE RELATES TO THESE FRINGE PEOPLE.

Running Wolf (aka Jimmie Lee Brown) talks about "tremendous" community support and all i see are news cameras and some washed up hippies trying to relive the Berkeley '60s.

WHERE IS THE REPRESENTATION FROM THE 31,000 STUDENTS?? NO ONE CARES ABOUT THIS.

Also, has the heavy police presensce ever stopped the re-supply efforts? No....Why? Because they let it happen. Do you think anyone of the bums will be able to get thru when the chainsaws come out to cut down the trees.........I HIGHLY FREAKIN DOUBT IT. Enjoy ur little freak show while it lasts.

damn i'm thirsty....i need a beer.

Props to Ayr. Keep up the good work resisting this project!

Glad to see thee trees are still standing!
by Acorns as emergency food source
Another factor to consider before destroying native oak trees is that the unsustainable industrial agriculture system can eventually be replaced by a combo of small scale bioregional organic farming and collection of wild food sources. Acorns from native oaks are a very important wild food source that would be available for human consumption in the event of a collapse and/or phase out of petrochemically dependent industrial agriculture system. So even if people don't care about oaks as habitat for biodiversity, shade trees and as a cultural ecological resource, there's also the potential for oak's acorns as an emergency food staple..

Personally i have prepped and eaten acorns from the inland valley oak species, and other oaks also. Almost all acorns are edible and nutritious once tannins are leached out with water and cooked after leaching. The leached and cooked acorns are tasty and filled with energy (EFAs, carbs, proteins) and nutrition, so why be foolish (like UC Berkeley admins) and destroy a source of food that doesn't require the addition of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers? Oaks will produce acorns with or without the presence or care of humans, so even if only a handful of humans survive a potential nuclear holocaust (origin in U.S., not Iran!!), they can increase their probability of survival by harvesting and cooking oak acorns!!

If endgame survival scenarios are not of your concern, then check out the potentials of research and nutrition science of oak acorns that others have noticed;

"Influence of thermal treatment on phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties of oak acorns from Serbia."

Abstract

"The aim of the present work was to investigate and compare phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of Quercus robur and Quercus cerris acorn kernels obtained before and after thermal treatment. Content of total phenolics, tannins, non-tannin phenolics and flavonoids was determined spectrophotometrically and content of gallic acid with HPLC. Antioxidant activity of the samples was assayed through FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power), DPPH scavenging test and inhibition of Fe2+/ascorbate induced lipid peroxidation. Extracts of native and thermally treated kernels showed high antioxidant activity, with extracts of thermally treated kernels being more active than extracts of native ones. Hydrolysable tannins and gallic acid were identified in all samples. Non-tannin phenolics, including gallic acid, were present in significantly higher quantities in thermally treated samples, whilst tannin content decreased.

This indicates that during thermal treatment hydrolysable tannins were degraded. As the result of this degradation and consequent increase of non-tannin phenolics content, and amongst them especially gallic acid, thermally treated samples possess higher antioxidant activity than do the native ones. The obtained results have provided further grounds for establishing Q. robur and Q. cerris acorn kernels as a source for functional food preparation."

This study shows that cooked acorns increase their antioxidant content, something people who have or wish to prevent cancer may care about..

If hardcore science and cancer prevention research with acorns isn't of interest, maybe good food, spirit and culture is;

"Here is a modern Acorn Bread recipe from the book "Cooking with Spirit, - North American Indian Food and Fact", By Darcy Williamson and Lisa Railsback Copyright 1987 by Darcy Williamson. Published by Maverick Publications, Drawer 5007, Bend, Oregon 97701.

Acorn Bread

To make bread, you will need the following:

6 Tbl. cornmeal
1/2 C cold water
1 C boiling water
1 tsp sale
1 Tbl butter (soy butter for vegans)
1 pkg active dry yeast
1/4 C lukewarm water
1 C mashed potatoes
2 C all-purpose flour
2 C finely ground leached acorn meal

Mix cornmeal with cold water, add boiling water and cook 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add sale and butter and cool to lukewarm. Soften yeast in lukewarm water. Add remaining ingredients to corn mixture, along with yeast. Knead to a stiff dough. Dough will be sticky. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk. Punch down, shape into two loaves, cover and let rise until doubled in bulk. Bake at 375 degrees F for 45 minutes."

Sounds like there is something of interest about oaks for everyone. Maybe the students at Berkeley are overwhelmed with their workload and the presence of "outsiders" who can devote their time to saving the oaks is a welcome sight? Many students may come by briefly to voice their support, though there could be some censorship, surviellence and threats against direct student involvement. Take their support in whatever form it comes, even if as slight as a nod of the head and quiet greeting..

If this threat to oaks comes from the university's construction of a new mega-stadium for corporate sponsored sports teams and their elite fan clubs, consider the alternative of neighborhood sports playing fields throughout Oakland and the Bay Area that would be accessible to all people regardless of income level..

After I reading that I'm not even going to read the rest of your post. I saw something about acorn bread? Acorn bread???? I guess that goes to show the sort of people interested in this stuff.

But let me tell you that the above quote COMPLETELY disqualifies you from stating your opinion. It's beyong illogical, its so uniformed its actually funny. U prolly didn't go to college and certainly didn't go to Berkeley. This is not some "mega-stadium" and its not for "corporate sponsors". "Elite fan club".....UMMM NO.....HOW ABOUT THE STUDENT BODY?

It's the UNIVERSITY'S team and program. God....i dont even know how to respond to your post it's so idiotic.

What's the name of UCBs' Team? What kind of record do they have? Isn't college about learning rather than bashing your head against another persons head? Maybe we should use the stadium money for research against global warming.
