Human Experimentation 101 -- Why Not Gas Masks for the Whole Bay Area?

by repost
KQED's Forum radio covered the aerial spraying issue today. The guy for our side -- Paul Schramski -- was excellent! He really did a great job underscoring that the State of California is simply not listening to the people. A caller also pointed out this is just a large human experiment since it has never been done before. I was thinking, we should tell the state to issue a gas mask to every affected resident if it's so important, since they literally do not know the outcome and already do know that hundreds have been sickened. Also, if it happens, people will be leaving the area in droves, so local businesses will be empty -- businesses should be made aware that they will lose money to light a fire under them about this. Worth listening to the show.

Apple Moths

The state of California is poised to begin an aerial spraying program over the Bay Area to eradicate the light brown apple moth, which officials say could decimate the state's agricultural crops. Forum discusses the proposal with advocates and critics.
Host: Michael Krasny
Guests:

A.G. Kawamura, secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture

Paul Schramski, state director of Pesticide Watch, a statewide public health and environmental group

Robert Roach, assistant agricultural commissioner for Monterey County

It's likely that some animals and insects will suffer or die, and because this is literally a large-scale EXPERIMENT, they do not know the outcome.

There has been NO environmental impact report.

That translates to "you and your pets and all the critters and bugs of the Bay Area will be our subjects for the EIR data" . . . .

I know, I work in research. No EIR is simply illegal. It's a slap in the face to those who have worked so hard getting the precautionary principle through in SF. This literally brushes that whole concept aside as meaningless.

These are hormones. Hormones can be specific to an animal / insect, but very little is known about how subtle hormone effects can occur across species, especially when dousing a huge area with them from the sky. This is not hysteria, it is common sense and social justice. The methods being used by the state to force this through can be used for other future efforts if we do not show massive resistance.

(Please do not only move the spraying posts to Santa Cruz -- this is here, now, not just in SC and Monterey. There will be several meetings in the last week of February so I urge you to do a front page story, at least just during that time. Thanks for all the important work you do.)

Those meetings are here:

BERKELEY COMMUNITY MEETING
Sunday, February 24, 5pm
Berkeley Hillside Club
2286 Cedar (between Spruce and Arch), Berkeley, CA
The Berkeley City Council, which has not as of yet taken a side in the debate, but was reported as having a “wait and see” attitude, will be meeting with the CDFA at a city council meeting, where the public has the right to be heard. This is an important night to confront the CDFA.

CDFA PRESENTATION TO THE CITY OF BERKELEY
Tuesday, February 26, 7pm,
2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way
(To be more prepared for an argument with the CDFA, please review this power point presentation they’re likely to be giving this evening:

OAKLAND HEARING ON
RESOLUTION AGAINST AERIAL SPRAYING
Tuesday, February 26th, 7pm.
Oakland City Hall, One Frank Ogawa Plaza, Oakland.
Hearing on resolution against aerial spraying proposed by Councilmembers Brunner and Reid.
by Aaron Aarons
Perhaps both the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front will apply their militant direct-action tactics to stopping this spraying.
