Still Hungry for Peace and Impeachment: Convincing Conyers: What will it take?
Recently CodePink veteran and Gandhi Peace Brigade partner, Leslie Angeline, described to her friends in the Bay Area why she began a fast to urge impeachment of Vice President Cheney-- a necessary step toward exposing criminals who led us to war on lies. (For more go to: http://tinyurl.com/2v4qeu)
Her sheduled meeting with Congressman John Conyers has been postponed, but friends tell her that he may be beginning to listen... again. What follows is an e-mail Leslie sent out this afternoon.
Dear Fasters and Supporters
Thank you so much for sending your encouraging and inspirational words. There are now twenty-two of us fasting... some for a day, some for a week...some for as long as it takes! To all of you, I send a special THANK YOU! Your commitment to holding this shameful administration accountable gives us strength.
I was unable to meet with Congressman Conyers on Thursday, because the Judiciary hearing with Mukasey went much later than expected. I was given a new appointment for Tuesday Feb. 12 @ 3:00pm. It was disappointing, but I was able to sit in on the hearing and see how visibly upset and frustrated several of the Judiciary members were with Mukasey's admission that he would not enforce Congressional contempt citations, nor investigate torture or warrantless wiretapping charges. It appears the attorney general believes this administration IS above the law.
Ellen Taylor, a CodePink sister who's joined the fast, and Manijeh Saba did have the opportunity to meet with John Conyers on Thursday. The meeting lasted for over an hour and it seemed to both of them that the Congressman was willing to listen to their reasons for beginning impeachment hearings, but he needs support. He also needs to be convinced that it would be the "smart" thing to do. He expressed concerns about the possibility of negative consequences, especially in the upcoming elections. So Ellen and I walked the halls of Congress yesterday, encouraging Judiciary members and our representatives to support impeachment hearings against Dick Cheney. We came away feeling hopeful.

I grew up hearing the incredible stories of people putting their bodies on the line for justice. I want to remind Congressman John Conyers of the time when the government told the people, "Be patient." and the country said "NO!" People are dying every day in Iraq, being tortured in our name, being denied habeas corpus...and Iran continues to be threatened ... "
Leslie began a fast on Rosa Parks' Birthday last Monday. She will be meeting with the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, John Conyers, this Tuesday to ask him to begin impeachment hearings against Dick Cheney.

It could start a tidal wave of hope and change that could sweep the country, much like the Watergate hearings, and bring about a much needed cleansing, just like our fast. Imagine ... What if the next Judiciary Committee hearing Chairman Conyers gaveled into order was the impeachment hearing of Vice-President Dick Cheney?
Chairman Conyers needs to hear from us RIGHT NOW! Send him a message of encouragement. Let him know that we care about the Constitution and we’re counting on him to continue investigating wrongdoings in the White House. Together we can convince him that only impeachment hearings will achieve that goal.

here are twenty members of the impeachment movement currently fasting in DC in support of hearings, and Conyers has agreed to meet with one of them on Tuesday (Leslie Angeline, whose father was one of the original freedom riders, is a Beach Impeach veteran). Conyers could AT ANY MINUTE HE CHOOSES initiate impeachment hearings. And impeachment movement leaders have asked that on Monday and Tuesday ALL OF US call, fax, or email Conyers and demand that he stop diddling around, stop playing with us, and start hearings.
