Police Surveillance at the Farmers Market Drum Circle

by Nick
Perched in the stairwell of the UCSC extension building, Santa Cruz police were filming the drum circle and Food Not Bombs at the Farmers' Market on Wednesday, Jan 30, presumably with regards to the new "15 minute parking lot rule". The filming was interrupted when a revolutionary war era citizen who holds the belief that people should still have rights (the right to peaceably assemble) began waving a "Don't Tread On Me" flag in front of the camera. Here is a group of photographs.

After being blocked by the flag for several minutes and being observed by a growing crowd, the officer left the building and waved to the camera.

Great work! That last photo is priceless...

Amazing how you could get clear pictures of Officer Auldridge through the tinted glass with the sun shining on it.

I hope you'll be at the Forbidden Lot #4 Wednesday afternoon again. Joe Schultz is slated to bring food. Activist Steve Argue has said he'll be down with some literature. I hope to have a petition.

Thanks again for the coverage

After dealing with this terrorist criminal gangster, It's my personal agenda to have Officer Auldridge removed from the force. Sound extreme?

this is just a relatively recent encounter with this hitler's youth scout-master...

Officer Auldridge's name has all too frequently come up in street interviews chronicling police abuse against locals.

Several weeks ago, a man reported having his finger broken by being thrown in the back of a squad car by Auldridge in an incident outside Taco Bell. The man wasn't even charged with anything many hours later on being released.

This is probably another example of SCPD misuse of the "public intoxication" penal code (see "In Response to Craig" at http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/01/24/18474462.php?show_comments=1#comments).

Several weeks ago I observed Aldridge falsely advising "the Ten O'Clock" club as some musicians and their public are described outside New Leaf Market on Pacific Avenue at night. In order to disperse their public assembly, Auldridge had told them it was illegal to sit down on the edge of the waist-high planter between the Alfresco's and Cafe Campesino kiosks.

Both cafes were closed at the time, and folks were using the area as it as intended to be used as public space.

I then walked over, sat down in front of Auldridge and loudly advised him and the group that sitting there was no violation and encouraged him to either ticket me or stop harassing others. Auldridge smiled, ignored me, and continued to stand there, his squad car double-parked on Pacific Avenue blocking traffic.

Please post any encounters with Aldridge that show illegal, unconstitutional, or abusive behavior.

I'm also looking for someone to review the radio archives for Auldridge incidents so they can be gathered together and examined in sequence.

Incidentally, the SCPD is quite protective of Auldridge. I called to ask them his first name (which is or should be public information). The desk personnel refused, instead giving me only his badge number.

Please let the rest of us know if you've had problems getting public information from the secretive SCPD.
by your brain on....
Wow. Love this piece of photjournalism. The pictures tell it all. Policeman wants to play CIA spy and uses his nifty new gadget (courtesy of the taxpayers via Homeland INsecurity) to film the big, bad drum circle! This belongs on an episode of freakin' Reno 911!!!! What a dumb as*! What a slap in the face to employees (teachers, farmworkers) who do REAL work and put in tons of overtime for free.

Santa Cruz City Police Chief, are you reading this? THIS is why you are having such a hard time getting recruits! Normal people are disgusted by this misappropriation of public funds during these hard times. I'm going to recommend that the city start cutting their police budget. Obviously there isn't enough legitimate criminal activity to warrant having so many police officers in this city!

Miss Brain, I spend sleepless nights looking at this site, hoping for the approval of normal people like yourself.

When you mention people with "real jobs" who put in free overtime, are you including Norse, Becky and the drummers? I daresay Auldridge is contributing more to the welfare of the residents of this town than Constable Norse, et al. I mean, why do you think they ran the trust fundee out of Carmel? Huh?

Miss Brain, you really need some.
