Hello all,

You are invited to join us at Kresge College Town Hall on Thursday, January 10, for the University Café, 5:00 -7:30 pm. The purpose of this Café is to create an opportunity for all members of the campus community to think together about the future of UCSC.

The World Café format provides an occasion for people to come together for conversations about questions that matter to them and their communities. The process is informal, while the design principles that guide the Café harness the power of conversation for educational and social value. The Café process fosters authentic dialogue and creates actionable knowledge.

(more info: http://www.theworldcafe.com/principles.htm)

What actually happens during a Café? Groups of four to five people gather around a table and explore a question, or series of questions, prepared by the Café hosts. People move in several rounds of conversation from table to table. The groups eventually converge and share their discoveries which are captured on large wall charts by a professional graphic facilitator. These charts may serve as the starting point for further discussion and/or follow up on the ideas and inspirations that emerge from the Café.

The World Café is not about making anyone right or wrong, for confrontation, making speeches or making demands. In a Café no particular course of action or program is espoused.

I hope you will join us for the first campus-wide University Café! We will open the event at 5:00 p.m. with light refreshments and enjoy substantial snacks at the close (around 7:30 p.m.). Please RSVP to Mike Yamauchi-Gleason at myg [at] ucsc.edu.

If you have any questions please feel free to call either of us.

Best regards,

Laurie McCann/ Campus Ombuds (831-459-4606),
