1/27 Forum: Labor, The WPA Proposals And The Fight For New Orleans and Katrina Survivors

by Labor Video Project
The fight for a WPA project to rebuild New Orleans and Gulf public housing as well as re-opening
Charity Hospital which is the largest public hospital in Louisiana will be the focus of this forum.
Property speculators and developers are seeking to destroy all the public housing and use the
charity hospital for high priced condominiums instead of re-opening it for the people of
New Orleans. 65% of the people in New Orleans have no healthcare insurance and the
hospital is a vital institution. It employed over 5,000 workers.
The forum will also look at the 75th anniversary of the WPA in American and why such a
program is needed now throughout the US.

Join trade unionists, housing activists and labor historians as we look at the struggle of the labor movement in New Orleans, the fight to rebuild housing, the Charity hospital and why a WPA program is critical to rebuilding the region and allowing people to return and rebuild their lives.
In October of last year over 100 labor journalists, radio and video journalists went to New Orleans and recorded the struggles going on from the point of view of the working class. We will be screening some of the video produced at the Labor Media Center in New Orleans.
