New York Sun art critic David Cohen will lecture on the School of London painters titled “Their blood in our veins: the School of London painters and the old masters.” David Cohen explores the obsessive reworking of images from the history of art by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, and R.B. Kitaj, who were closely associated and known as the School of London. These artists’ relationship to the old masters defines them as a group of painters with common interests and at the same time marks differences between them as individual artists. The presentation is particularly relevant in terms of the vitality of tradition in art today. Additional comparisons will be made with other British artists who reference old masters including Richard Hamilton, Jake and Dinos Chapman, and Merlin James. Mr. Cohen is Editor and Publisher for artcritical.com; Art Critic for The New York Sun and Gallery Director of the New York Studio School.
