At least 11 people, including five children, have been killed after a suicide bomber crashed a lorry into a checkpoint in the central Iraqi town of Tarmiyah.
Six volunteers from the local Awakening Council, one of many Sunni groups that have begun taking on al-Qaeda in Iraq, also died in the attack on Monday, a police spokesman said.
Security officials said another six people died when suspected al-Qaeda fighters attacked two villages further to the north.
The attacks came two days after Osama bin Laden warned Sunni Muslims in Iraq not to take up arms against his al-Qaeda, saying those who did were "traitors".
