Iraq Moratorium Mall Walkers Confront Marine Recruiters

by Granny B. Good (info [at] raginggrannies.com)
Mall Walkers for Peace including members of San Mateo Peace Action, Declaration of Peace, Veterans for Peace, San Mateo Democracy for America and the Raging Grannies strolled the Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo California where they were greeted by many folks pleased with the message on their t-shirts: Troops Home Now!

Iraq Moratorium participants took care to avoid being ousted by Hillsdale Mall security by posing as shoppers. We carried name brand bags (hey where did you get that Nordstrom bag, Mikey?) and kept a low-profile....except for our clothing, that is!

§Sharing Thoughts with Marine Recruiters

Ashley gave them the long version of why we should be OUT of the Middle East. Grannies thought the Marines in their red-striped blue pants and gold buttons looked ever so much like tin soldiers, what with all the Christmas decor they could have popped in from the Nutcracker Ballet....

Where better to sing "Away in a Sweatshop" to the tune of "Away in a Manger" than in front of the Disney Store?

§Study in contrasts

Ashley (actually Ashleigh) reports that the recruiters came up to her and asked, "Why don't you support the troops?"
Thus ensued the lengthy discussion.

We were approached by a couple of Marine recruiters, who wanted to ask why we don't support the troops. They were very gung-ho, but not at all rude or nasty. [We] think we convinced them that we do support the troops (we cited the third tenet of the Resolution Peace pledge, about supporting the troops and veterans) -- the difference is that we want them here instead of there.
Our views were 180 degrees from theirs about everything, of course. An example: they thought the lesson learned in Vietnam is that Americans should support the war effort 100%; we thought the lesson learned in Vietnam was that we shouldn't go into wars like that. Another example: they think embedding journalists with the troops means that we're only getting the "bad" news at home; we think that embedding the media means that we're getting a laundered version of the news.

They are due their view but I love the contrast, a Nordstrom bag yet they represent the "average" person... It is too laugh. Tin Soldier's??? These men lay their life on the line, these women in the USMC and other services lay their life on the line too and you have the gual to call them, Tin Soldiers??? Lovely way to show your support. Thier uniform is steeped in heratige but you wouldn't know anything about that, you tear down paradise and put up your Mall Parking Lots so Granny has a place to go to protest in between shopping at Nordstorm's and Macy's.

These men and women collect toys all year to give to those less fortunate (those that don't have the ability to shop at the mall like Granny) and you have the nerve to call it the collection of war toys.

You should be ashamed of yourselves...

The Nordstrom bag is a PROP and Grannies hate malls...we DON"T shop in them. Most of us are former union members from teaching, nursing and the trades, living on pensions. The dressiest clothes we own are our Granny costumes, which mostly come from thrift shops. Happy to let you know what's up. Do contact us for more information and especially if you can donate books to our project: materials for women's prison libraries which are woefully undersupplied. Oh, and several of us are former English teachers, so please do check your spelling when you post. Much appreciated! Grannies
I am so happy to see activism on the Peninsula. Thank you for making yourself so visible. It seems like too many people are too careful to avoid political speech in order to avoid offending those who might have a less enlightened perspective. The war is based on LIES, it is immoral and illegal. The continued occupation encourages enmity and violence and irresponsibly places our armed forces in harms way. Nobody faults the service men and women for being ordered to serve in Iraq, but we must hold the misleaders responsible and IMPEACH them for the massive campaign of LIES and the subsequent illegal orders that pushed us to a first strike war for oil and military-industrial profiteering.
I hope and pray that the Constitutional rule of law will be obeyed and that Congress will actually take their oath to uphold and protect the Constitution from all enemies both foreign and DOMESTIC seriously enought to prosecute the Commander in Thief for the war crimes authorizing torture and misleading America into a war based on massive, repeated LIES.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
