Three-Day Film Series at REDCAT Examines Legacy of the Black Panther Party
Dec. 14, 2007, Los Angeles, California—All Power to the People: The History and
Legacy of the Black Panther Party at REDCAT (Roy
and Edna Disney CalArts Theater)
in Los Angeles from January 10-12. This series of
screenings and discussions tracks the
history and legacy of the Black Panther Party:
its revolutionary politics, grassroots
ideology, irrepressible leaders, and the struggle
for justice that continues today.
The program begins on Thursday, January 10 with Newsreel Films from the 1960s
documenting interviews with the Party’s leaders
including Huey P. Newton, Eldridge
Cleaver and Kathleen Cleaver. The films document
the Party’s ideology including its
Ten-Point and Free Breakfast programs. The
evening continues with The Murder of Fred
Hampton, a powerful film about the charismatic
leader of the Illinois chapter of the Black
Panther Party. Following the screening, Fred
Hampton Jr., Chairman of Prisoners of
Conscience Committee, and Emory Douglas, former
Minister of Culture for the Black
Panther Party, will be in discussion.

In Friday evening’s program, Legacy of Torture
chronicles a case that began in 1971
when several alleged “Black militants” were
arrested and tortured to obtain confessions.
In 1975, a Federal Court in San Francisco threw
out all of the evidence obtained in New
Orleans. In 2005, some of the original San
Francisco Police Department investigators
and FBI agents re-opened the case. Following the screening, Hank Jones, Ray
Boudreaux and Richard Brown of the San Francisco
8 will discuss the case. They are
joined by their attorney John Philipsborn and actor/activist Danny Glover.

On Saturday, January 12, All Power to the People
and Bastards of the Party examine
the void left in the wake of the Black Panther
Party through the lens of the Los Angeles
uprising in 1992. Inspired by his work as a TV
cameraman during the uprising, director
Lee Lew Lee investigated the history of race
relations in America and the impact of the
Black Panther Party. Lee’s comprehensive, full
length documentary includes archival
footage and compelling interviews with ex-FBI and
CIA agents, journalist/artist Gordon
Parks, and other political activists. Bastards of
the Party explores the political roots of
two of Los Angeles’s most notorious gangs, the
Crips and the Bloods, from the 1950s
through the 1990s. The film’s title comes from a
passage in Mike Davis’s City of Quartz
that reads: "The Crips and the Bloods are the
bastard offspring of the political parties of
the 1960s. Most of the gangs were born out of the
demise of those parties. Out of the
ashes of the Black Panther Party came the Crips
and the Bloods and the other gangs."
Director Cle Sloan presents a compelling,
humanizing view of this history through
perspectives of current and past gang members.
These films will be accompanied by a
trailer for the forthcoming film by director Greg
Everett, 41st & Central: The Untold Story
of the Southern California Chapter of the Black
Panther Party for Self-Defense. Sloan,
Everett and former LA Panther Roland Freeman will be in discussion.

All Power to the People is co-presented by REDCAT
and The Museum of Contemporary
Art (MOCA) in conjunction with MOCA's exhibition
Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art
of Emory Douglas. The exhibition is curated by
CalArts School of Art faculty member
and MOCA Ahmanson Curatorial Fellow Sam Durant and will be on view through
February 24 at MOCA Pacific Design Center in West
Hollywood. This program is cocurated
by Durant and REDCAT acting Gallery Director & Curator Clara Kim.
