Large Protest expected at AIPAC dinner, Monday evening

by Jim Harris (people (at) StopAIPAC.org)
Say NO to a Lobby for War!
Several peace, justice, human rights groups will protest at the annual AIPAC membership dinner. As AIPAC continues to push for sanctions and escalation against Iran, supports the siege on the people of Gaza that is resulting in a humanitarian crisis, supports evermore US taxpayer aid to Israel despite its continued occupation, hundreds are expected to gather in protest for a new foreign policy for peace and justice.
Peace groups to protest at AIPAC Lobby Dinner in Oakland Monday evening.
“Say NO to a Lobby for War”

Details: Protest at AIPAC membership Dinner.
Monday, December 17-- 6pm – 8pm

The protest will be a nonviolent vigil outside the Marriot hotel (11th and Broadway, Downtown Oakland) the venue for the AIPAC dinner that is attended by AIPAC members and supporting politicians.

A wide coalition of peace, justice and human rights groups will protest at Monday’s AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) “membership dinner” in Oakland. AIPAC continues to push for escalation against Iran --despite a release this week of the National Intelligence Estimate that flatly rejects AIPAC’s key rationale for such action, specifically that Iran will have nuclear weapons in the immediate future unless punitive sanctions or military attack is considered. AIPAC also lobbies for billions more in US aid to Israel despite Israel’s continued military occupation of Palestine.

“Stop AIPAC” is organizing this protest because we believe that peace will be achieved in the Middle East by applying international law and the support of human rights for all. It will not come if US politicians continue unconditional support for policies of one side in the dispute, but that is exactly what is supported by the AIPAC lobby. We further believe that all nuclear weapons (including the massive nuclear stockpile of the US and Israel’s own nuclear weapons) together pose a threat to humanity, and therefore we call for genuine global nuclear disarmament. The US is violating its own domestic laws by sending military aid to Israel when it is a nuclear state that is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This hypocrisy limits positive influence the US may have to prevent a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

“We must end support for Israeli occupation of Palestine. We are sending our tax dollars to Israel as it demolishes homes in the West Bank, even while we need more funding to build homes in West Oakland; these are not the values of a progressive community such as Oakland” says Jim Harris of Stop AIPAC. “Stop AIPAC” will be joined by Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Says Mo Shooer of JVP “We want to make clear that AIPAC does not speak for us and the U.S. policies it advocates that are destructive to Israelis and Palestinians.”

Groups endorsing the Protest include:
Middle East Children's Alliance • Jewish Voice for Peace • Alameda Party Green Party • Bay Area Women in Black • International Solidarity Movement - Northern California • United for Peace and Justice, Bay Area • Break the Siege • East Bay Peace Action • Berkeley Women in Black • East Bay Coalition for Self-rule for Iraqis (EB-COSSI)

When you call all the despicable Democrats in this area, all of whom, just like the Republicans, by definition have voted for aid for the US military base in the Middle East to protect US oil profits, Israel, not only should you tell them to boycott AIPAC, you should also tell them to cut off all aid to Israel. This is true for Barbara Lee as for the rest of them as she voted for the resolution praising the butcher of Palestine, Ariel Sharon. There are only two parties that support the Palestinian liberation struggle, Peace & Freedom Party and the Green Party. A LITMUS TEST ISSUE IN THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION MUST BE CUTTING OFF AID TO ISRAEL. Not only is it a presidential election year but the entire House and 1/3 of the Senate is up for re-election or being tossed out. Nancy Pelosi, pro-Israel every chance she gets, is being challenged by Cindy Sheehan in San Francisco. We need lots more of such challenges. The young people must think it strange that "progressives" have been proomoting the pro-Israel Democrats all these years. We have only had these pickets of AIPAC since 2000 or so. IT IS TIME THE ISRAEL GARBAGE BE TOSSED IN THE DUSTBIN OF HISTORY. 2008 is also the 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE to the 60 year occupation, and the least we can do is to never vote for anyone or any party that supports Israel. This stinking little racist, theocratic hellhole of 4 million Zionists is an insult to human decency, with its daily torture of Palestinians and theft of Palestinian land, all paid for with US tax dollars to the tune of $6 billion a year, all of which we need for social services right here in the backward, poverty stricken USA that still has no national heathcare system paid for with our tax dollars as exists in the rest of the industrialized world. ISRAEL DOES NOT EXIST FOR ONE SECOND WITHOUT US TAX DOLLARS. AIPAC is of course the wealthy, anti-communist hustlers who still claim to believe in religion while claming to be educated, an irreconciliable contradiction, whose legacy is to support the murder of the Rosenbergs on June 19, 1953 by the US government as AIPAC, who were executed on false charges so as to make Jew, Communist and traitor synonymous in the US capitalist class' promotion of the anti-Communist war agaist Korea, the same as the war against Vietnam, and the war against the workingclass that continues to this day. These Zionists, including but not limited to AIPAC, are collaborators with Nazi USA, just as their predecessors collaborated with Nazi Germany. See

The religious Jewish community, of which AIPAC is a major part, vote 70% Democrat, so when you vote for any Democrat (or any Republican), you get AIPAC. If you want peace in the Middle East and everywhere else, you have to vote Peace & Freedom (or any socialist party on your ballot outside California) or Green. The only hope for peace in the Middle East is a socialist, secular single state of Palestine and a socialist, secular Middle East.

I hope the protest goes well.

Hardly anyone at Santa Clara or Sacramento.
Why the lack of interest?
Is it weather related or is it because of the holidays coming up?
by Love animals don't eat them
Hitler was certainly right about vegetarianism- it is the only sane way to eat

There were 20 in Sacramento, which is good for Sacramento. I have not heard what the turnout in Santa Clara was but if they had 20, they should be proud of themselves. First and foremost, you are picketing a sacred cow, an organization, AIPAC, that claims to represent the Jewish community, although it actually only represents the capitalist class, in a society that is very well aware of its own 2,000 year history of anti-Semitism against Jews, and that anti-Semitism exists to this day. The Zionists, including AIPAC, also make it difficult if not impossible for people to get jobs if they work in fields where Zionists are major employers. It is also vacation time for lots of people, and many of those people leave the area for vacation. Our peace and civil rights movements of today were lucky to have 20 people at protests in the 1950s. The peace movement as we know it today only came to major prominence by the end of the war against Vietnam in 1975. The civil rights movement in the 1950s was a handful of radicals who were crazy enough to believe that blacks and whites deserved equal treatment. The concepts of women's and gay liberation, rights for the disabled and elderly all came in the 1970s, when the peace movement became very large. In fact, in the 1950s, you may as well be a communist to be for peace and civil rights, and to be called a communist in the 1950s was like being called being called a traitor. To picket the Zionists is literally to take the bull by the horns, so congratulations to all who were able to turn out, and we will all certainly keep fighting.
by Santa Clara
I was at Santa Clara, and the turnout was much smaller than last year- what i found particularly egregious was that certain people/organization tried to commercialize the protest, selling crafts for what they claimed was "fundraising". There should be no commercial sales at an event like this- it dilutes the messages and changes the focus. Having people shopping at a protest is ridiculous. but hell, its America, and 'tis the season, I guess.
Last years Santa Clara event was so much better, better organized, better attended, more on point.
by absolutely!
What was with the Viva Oxaca sign at Santa Clara?
I didn't get that at all.
What does that have to do with AIPAC?
by Jones
Not a single protestor showed up in San Francisco- and that is the AIPAC flagship event.
by Ugh
The "Viva Oxaca" part was on the back, they were just recycling the sign.

As per the Vendor, she imports stuff from Palestine and sells it to support the crippled Palestinian economy--What's so wrong about that?

Was there a call for a protest in San Francisco?
by Free Palestine
Maybe 75 people and low energy. Much less than in the past. With all the outreach, where was everybody?
What fantasy world are the organizers of these events living in? The last 2 weeks of December are the biggest vacation weeks of the year. Further, having any protest against AIPAC is extraordinary. It is was not more than 10 years ago, if not less, that such a protest was unthinkable. The Bay Area protest, by the way, was in Oakland, not in San Francisco. It is still the same crowd, but apparently some people think there were 2 Bay Area events; there was no San Francisco event advertised and given the demographics, most likely no such event occurred. It is extraordinary that 75 people managed to come out to a night time winter event during vacation season to protest AIPAC. Now that you have protested AIPAC, what do you plan to do about the 2008 election? Are you going to finally vote your conscience, which means voting either Peace & Freedom or Green since the Democrats and Republicans are 100% pro-Israel, regardless of the office? That is, whether you vote for city council or Congress, mayor or president, a vote for a Democrat or Republican is a vote for the murder and torture of Palestinians and theft of Palestinian land, and a vote for the war machine, which exists regardless of AIPAC's existence. The war machine exists to maximize the profits of the capitalist class, the primary goal of capitalism. It is the profit motive of capitalism that is the cause of all these wars. The primaries are less than 7 WEEKS FROM TODAY, on FEBRUARY 5. THEY CONTAIN LOTS OF IMPORTANT PROPOSITIONS TOO. THEN WE HAVE 2 MORE ELECTIONS, ONE IN JUNE FOR THE NON-PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES PLUS PROPOSITIONS AND THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION. This little protest is just one small aspect of the struggle, and 75 people is an excellent turnout. If you are looking for another protest, comes January 19, we will be defending women's right to abortion, also only seriously defended by Peace & Freedom Party and the Green Party as the Democrats are busy welcoming the anti-abortion crowd that is not already there and the Republicans are openly anti-abortion, as is the US Supreme Court with its 5-4 anti-abortion decision criminalizing late term abortions, and those justices were approved by Democrats. There is a lot of work to do, and the biggest impact we can have is teaching people to never vote Democrat-Republican and to always vote either Green or Peace & Freedom.
by Any photos?
Did any take photos they can post here, or direct us to a blog or alternate website?

Its not about numbers people.
Did we get any press?
Did we reach any pedestrians?
Did we convince AIPAC attendees to foresake their chicken dinner and stand with us?
There are other ways to measure sucess besides numbers.

Not much separates the far left from the far right, now. There were some classicly anti-Semitic signs at AIPAC in Oakland. Too bad the organizers of the Oakland protest didn't make it a hate-free zone- so we could focus on the issues and not on the hate.
