CALL TO ACTION: Join Informational Picket Line to Defend the Right to Housing!
In New Orleans, the U.S. government is escalating its attacks on the human rights of New Orleans renters by deciding to BULLDOZE ALL PUBLIC HOUSING, once home to 5000 working class African American families. If families have no housing, their human right to return to their city is effectively blocked.
The demolition of all four major public housing developments has been set for mid-December. We are calling on our national allies to join with the residents of New Orleans and all those who believe in the HUMAN RIGHT TO HOUSING to resist demolition.
As we all know, the housing crisis for low income families is not unique to New Orleans. It is a major cause of driving residents out of their homes in OAKLAND, SAN FRANCISCO, the BAY AREA, and urban communities of color throughout the U.S.
The Stop the Demolition Coalition of New Orleans has put out a national call to join the movement to preserve affordable housing in New Orleans . They suggest three ways we can do this:
*** Organizing in our home communities to voice our belief that 'Housing is a Human Right!'
In the Bay Area, the Katrina Solidarity Network invites you to join our informational picket line on FRIDAY, DEC. 14, NOON, IN OAKLAND
*** In celebration of International Human Rights Day, (Monday, Dec. 10) we can call these housing power brokers in New Orleans to demand they stop the bulldozing and reopen public housing:
++ New Orleans City Council Member Stacey Head (504-658-1020);
++ New Orleans City Council Member Shelley Midura (504-658-1010);
++ D.H. Griffin, a contractor hired to bulldoze New Orleans Lafitte public housing (888-336-3366)
++ Senator David Vitter, the Louisiana senator supporting demolition by blocking the passage of Senate Bill 1668: the Gulf Coast Recovery Act. (504-589-2753).
*** Participate in organized resistance to bulldozers in New Orleans from Dec. 10 through Dec. 16. If you can travel to New Orleans and participate, please email a Pledge of Resistance to ' action [at] peopleshurricane.org' with 'registration' in the subject line.
