Rally to Support Oakland Clinic Access!

by Lauren
Anti-choice "protesters" have been harassing, intimidating, threatening, and blocking patients, friends, family, and staff of reproductive health clinics for too many years. Now, the City of Oakland and East Bay clinics are uniting to support and ordinance protecting safe and unresticted access to clinics. Don't let the antis trample women's and human's rights any longer--come to the rally, show your support for safe access to legal and necessary health care.
Help stop antis from preventing safe and legal access to reproductive health care! Antis in Oakland have been blocking access to reproductive health clinics for too long: threatening and chasing patients, friends, family, doctors, and staff, and we're trying to pass an ordinance to help keep access safe and unrestricted.

Come to the rally at 5 p.m., bring bullhorns and drums, posters and signs, to show your support for this very important ordinance. We will then march into the city council meeting at six to show the council just how many people support this ordinance.

If you can't make the rally or meeting, show your support for the Oakland Buffer Ordinance agenda item 10.24-CC online at:

Often, women in Oakland face intimidation and harassment when
attempting to access reproductive healthcare clinics. It is not
uncommon for demonstrators to block clinic entrances, pursue
patients and family members, and stop cars attempting to enter
the clinic parking lot. These actions intimidate patients and
inhibit their access to reproductive health services. Your
support is needed to protect women's safe access to Oakland
clinics!

Sincerely,

The Oakland City Council passed the Bubble Ordinance at the second reading last night (Tuesday). However a Temporary Restraining Order was filed in federal court today (Wed).
This is from the Chronicle this morning.
Abortion opponents filed suit in federal court Wednesday against an Oakland ordinance that establishes "medical safety zones" around reproductive health clinics to keep protesters at least 8 feet away from women, staff or escorts entering the buildings.

The City Council approved the ordinance on a second and final reading Tuesday night.

Katie Short, legal director of the Life Legal Defense Foundation, who sued the city on behalf of Union City resident Walter Hoye and others who distribute anti-abortion literature, called the city's ordinance "viewpoint discrimination."

The plaintiffs seek a temporary restraining order blocking the ordinance, which unlawfully singles out anti-abortion activists, Short said.

City Attorney John Russo said he believes the ordinance will withstand the lawsuit.

"They can distribute literature in City Hall Plaza and on just about any street corner," Russo said. "What they cannot do is harass or intimidate women who are exercising their right to choose and right to privacy."
