Originally From New America Media
Saturday, December 1, 2007 : MANILA, Philippines --- The United States expressed its continuing support for the government of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the wake of a coup d’ etat attempt last week, the latest bid by rebel soldiers to oust her. "The United States and the Philippines are long time democratic allies, and the US Embassy wishes to take this opportunity to reiterate our government's support for the rule of law, constitutional order and the government of the Philippines," the US embassy said in a statement on November 29th.
U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney spoke with Malacañang officials "to reiterate our confidence that this incident is being swiftly and peacefully resolved by the Philippine National Police, supported by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, in accordance with Philippine law," it said. In an announcement posted on its website, the U.S. Embassy advised American citizens to stay away from the vicinity of the Manila Peninsula. In the 1986 Edsa Revolution, the withdrawal of U.S. support for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was among the critical factors that turned the tide in favor of military officials who went against him.
