Solidarity with Venezuela on 12/2/07 - Day of Crucial Vote on Constitutional Reforms

by Jonathan Nack

Supporters of the government of President Hugo Chavez assert that the reforms are necessary to lay the basis for building what they call "Socialism for the 21st Century." Opponents claim that the Constitutional reforms will pave the way for a Chavez dictatorship. What is clear is that Venezuelans will have the opportunity through the vote to democratically decide what they want.

A day in solidarity with Venezuelan democracy has been organized in the Bay Area for this crucial day in the history of Venezuelan democracy. The event will be held in Oakland, at the Niebyl-Proctor Library, 6501 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland, from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Video documentaries on Venezuela, and a slide show from a recent tour, will be presented from 2-6pm. A party in celebration of Venezuelan democracy and in solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution will begin at 6pm.

The event is a benefit for the Emergency Response Network, which is being organized to resist U. S. intervention in Venezuelan politics, and is part of national "Days in Solidarity with Venezuela, in which solidarity events will be held in approximately a dozen cities in the U. S.
