APPLY for Low Income Energy Assistance NOW - Funds Are Running Out!

by kirsten anderberg
Every year the US federal government hands out energy assistance to the poor, but you need to know all their tricks to actually get it. RIGHT NOW is the time to get LHEAP. The application period is usually from Nov until they run out of money. So, if you are low income, call your utility company TODAY and ask who you call for LHEAP assistance. I even got LHEAP when I lived in a school bus using only wood heat while living in Santa Cruz. So make sure to apply NOW if you are low income in ANY living situation where you need heat...call your local energy company billing departments or local social services for info on who to contact for LHEAP TODAY!

If you are in Seattle, WA call 1-800-348-7144 to get an intake appt. You can also call Seattle City Light or Puget Sound Energy and ask them for the local numbers for your area. If you are disabled, they will do a phone intake interview...

When I lived in Eugene OR they gave me the ultimate runaround re this, so be persistent! In Eugene, you can call EWEB and ask how to apply for LHEAP. They ran me around with all kinds of vague crap, and I put in public complaints about their process. The govt in Eugene claims they do not have enough LHEAP funding for all who apply, so they make it nearly impossible to find out how to apply so they can meet the need. I asked why they did not do what Seattle does which is allow all to apply until you run out of funds, rather than try to make it impossible to find out how to apply but my complaints fell on deaf ears. So, again, if you are in Eugene, be demanding!

In any US city, you should be able to apply for LHEAP funds for heating costs.

And you should be able to find info on your local point of contact through your local energy company billing depts. and social services offices.

Don't go cold this winter simply because you did not apply for LHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the programs are up and running now so do not hesitate...the funds are going out the door as you read this!
