From a lonely story in the SF Bay Guardian to a blossoming international network, The Icarus Project has touched the lives of thousands of people with its powerful metaphors and radical message and is helping to redefine social conceptions of "mental illness" for a generation raised on Prozac and "Oppositional Defiant Disorder."

Come celebrate our Mad Community with a bunch of the founders and behind the scenes movers and shakers that make the Icarus Project happen. Come share your own story of Icarus and radical mental health, hear tales from our recent adventures, and dream about the next five years to come.

The Icarus Project is creating a new culture and language that resonates with our actual experiences of madness and “mental illness,” rather than trying to fit our lives into a conventional framework.

We are a website community, support network of local groups, and media project created by and for people struggling with bipolar disorder and other dangerous gifts commonly labeled as "mental illnesses." We believe that when we learn to take care of ourselves, the intertwined threads of madness and creativity can be tools of inspiration and hope in a repressed and damaged world. Our goal is to help people like ourselves feel less alienated, and to allow us—both as individuals and as a community—to tap into the true potential that lies between brilliance and madness.
