A suicide bomber has killed at least 30 people, including three parliamentarians, in northern Afghanistan, according to the interior ministry.

However, some MPs have said that more than 60 people died when the bomb was detonated at a sugar factory in the province of Baghlan on Tuesday.

Abdurrahman Sayedkhail, Baghlan's intelligence chief, told the Reuters news agency that the number of casualties was so high it was impossible to give an accurate number for now.

Kamin Khan, a police official, said that people "everywhere" were wounded, including police, children, MPs and officials from the department of agriculture.

Al Jazeera's Hamish McDonald in Kabul said that a delegation of Afghanistan's parliamentary finance committee was visiting the factory when the bomber struck.

Large crowds of residents and schoolchildren had gathered at the factory for the visit of the MPs.

Nightmare

"I saw bodies lying in the streets and some of the people were stealing the weapons of the dead soldiers. Children are screaming for help. It's like a nightmare," Mohammad Rahim, a local resident who said the blast had killed his two cousins, said.

"This is the act of the enemies of the people of Afghanistan"

§Many dead in Afghanistan bombing
by BBC (reposted)
Tuesday, November 6, 2007 : Many people are killed, including five MPs, in a bomb attack in northern Afghanistan, officials say.

At least five members of the Afghan parliament were killed in the blast, which hit the town of Baghlan. Other MPs are said to have been hurt.

The exact number of deaths is unclear, but the attack is one of the worst since the fall of the Taleban in 2001.

Violence has spread in Afghanistan where thousands of troops are battling the Taleban and their allies.

President Hamid Karzai has condemned the bombing in the "strongest terms possible".

Bodies

The bomb exploded in the centre of Baghlan town while a delegation of parliamentarians was visiting.

News agencies said a ceremony was being held to re-open a sugar factory.

Among MPs killed was Mustafa Kazimi, a prominent opposition figure, a municipal official told the BBC.

It is not clear how many other members of the delegation might also be casualties, the BBC's Alix Kroeger in Kabul says.

Casualty figures varied considerably in the immediate aftermath of the bomb, and the death toll could rise.

"The bodies of 90 people have been brought to the hospital so far and 50 people have been wounded," Baghlan hospital director Dr Khalilullah told the news agency.

Taleban denial

Children were also among the casualties, presidential spokesman Homayun Hamidzada told news agency AFP.

He said President Karzai "condemned this attack in the strongest terms possible.

"This is the act of the enemies of the people of Afghanistan," Mr Hamidzada said. This was a reference to militants of the ousted Taleban movement and their allies, say analysts.
